THE POUNDING ON the front door sounded throughout the empty night, 10:32pm and she leaned against her kitchen counter, hands pressed into a praying position as she begged the gods above to make her go away.

"Kim Haneul, I know you're in there. Do not ignore me.. let me inside, I want to talk." The middle-aged woman demanded, shouting through the door as the girl winced, biting her fingernails anxiously as she imagined her neighbors were upset with all the ruckus happening outside.

After what felt like forever, Haneul trudged over to her front door, hesitance clear in her movements as she unlocked the door, pulling it open to meet with none other than Baek Mihi, her own mother.

"Took you long enough." Mihi scoffed, pushing past Haneul almost immediately, as the girl followed after her with furrowed eyebrows.

"What the hell, mom? You don't just come into my home uninvited. More importantly, how did you find where I live?" Haneul questioned, watching her mother plop herself down onto her couch.

The girl crossed her arms over her chest, feeling her heartbeat quicken as she fought back the suffocating feeling at the sight of her birth giver.

"Ooh, you think because you're all grown up now you get to use big girl words and speak to me that way? Who do you think you are?" Mihi scoffed, waving her hand around as she shook her head.

"You've spoken to me that way all my life, mother. I think me saying one word won't damage you too much." The girl muttered out, sending an icy flare her mother's way.

"Would you stop lying and painting me out to be the bad guy? All I ever did to you growing up was be there for you, and raise you like a good mother should-- with discipline. If anything, you ruined my life." Mihi pointed her finger at Haneul, who's eyes widened before softening, feeling tears well up in her eyes.

Something about this scene fell all too familiar -- déjà vu spreading through her as she nibbled down at her bottom lip anxiously.

"Mom, you're drunk." She spoke, watching as the woman rolled her eyes.

"You don't get to tell me what I am, Kim Haneul." The woman slurred out, shaking her head as she leaned back into the couch.
