~ Missing Her ~
1 week ago :
"You're overworking, do you realise that?" S'M says walking inside his room.
"It's a busy month." he said focusing on the laptop screen.
"Come down for dinner in half an hour." he hummed.
He came out of his room to find the entire family including his in-laws.
"Surprise." M'M smiled at him. He smiled back and greeted them.
"When did you guys come?"
"Just 10 mins ago, how are you?" M'D answered.
"Just missing your daughter." he gave a sad smile.
Everybody's faces lost their smile but soon they tried to recover.
"Let's have dinner first" S'M lightened up the atmosphere. In silence they had their dinner.
"For a change, come live with us." Sumedh looked at his father in law.
"We also feel lonely sometimes, maybe you can keep us company. We're family afterall." He nodded with a small smile.
The next day he arrived and nostalgia hit him. As soon as he entered the living room he could remember the first time he saw Mallika, the same place they first interacted and how he agreed after her multiple questions.
'you're ready to put your entire fucking life, take this risk knowing everything for me, why?'' I don't want any other man to take this precious chance and I'll be the one watching'
He chuckled at his overconfident belief remembering it. Surely it wasn't much time but they weren't any ordinary couple. They knew each others importance since they had less time.
He loved her too early but hard. Her smile, her laugh, just her presence was enough to lit up his day.
He entered her room. It was blank to be honest. Light color walls, simple table, nothing creative sort of thing just like her, Simple and sophisticated.
He saw a frame on the nightstand. It was her photo with a trophy in NCC training.
Proud
Extremely proud he felt
He lied on the bed closing his eyes and remembering the nights they spent together. They holded hands every damn time. Call them weird, call them clingy.
A knock disturbed his thoughts and his mother in law entered with an album.
"Busy?" he shook his head
"I was cleaning the cupboard when i found old memories. If Mallika would have been here she would have never shown you, it's your chance." she chuckled.

6 days passed in a blur but in happiness. The Singhs were happy staying with their son in law. At least it didn't felt lonely. After 9-5 office Sumedh would sit with her parents and talk, watch Tv and discuss Mallika's childhood. They missed her but their talks somewhat filled her absence.
It was during dinner when his phone rang. "Hello?" he answered and goes numb after a few seconds. The Singhs notice and soon realization takes place.
The call ends and they look at Sumedh expectedly.
"how is she?"
"got shot on the shoulder" a gasp leaves their mouths hearing that.
"nothing serious, but I'm going to meet her and come back in 2 days." He rushed to the room and got packed.
He went, met her and could see through her eyes.
She could lie not wanting him to worry but he can't help it.
She was his wife and still he couldn't do anything to save her.
'be safe, don't get into trouble' were the usual words they exchanged on such moments. What more can they do even?
He could see she was hurt, how her shoulders pained, how much mentally she was troubled but the only thing that came out of her mouth was - I'm fine
He did not wish her goodbye rather 'I'll be seeing you soon'
The next morning he came to visit her in the hospital, she was asleep.
Her kissed her temples and then her forehead.
'I love you" he whispered and left with a strange feeling in his heart.
He returned home to encounter various questions answering which everybody was satisfied to some extent.
He drowned in their memories. Only things which kept him sane the next month.
He was distracted, a lot. A strange uneasy feeling settling in his heart. Why?
He didn't knew. But something was off.
He prayed every morning and night for her well being, for her safety.
He gazed at their wedding photo every night and cries in silence.
He missed her, badly!
'I love you .' he whispers to her photo frame kissing it and finally dozing off to his slumberland.
The next morning was usual. Nothing new.
Her mother in law brought breakfast to his room and made him eat him. He sometimes felt guilty for not taking care of them, it was vice-versa. But he couldn't help it.
He took a shower, got dressed for his office and walked downstairs. He greeted M'D who smiled at him and walked towards the door when his phone rang.
'unknown number.' he neglected the call and walked to his office keeping the phone on do not disturb.
Today was a big day, he was getting promoted.
'And Get a promotion.' he had promised himself to mark her words as true. And he did.
She will be proud of me, isn't it? Was the thought once he entered his office .

ps - little attempt to show second side of the story. As worried, lonely officers feel, their families are no less. It's an equal torture to both ends.
