Caroline and Wally barely spoke during the game. However, she did run into him when she was stealing a Dr. Pepper from the concessions."Hey, how's the game going?" Caroline squinted to look at the score board. Loosing, it figures.
"Shitty, just like we predicted." Wally tossed some popcorn into his mouth, gloomy.
"You know, I'm not opposed to turning the odds in our favor when Mr. Martin isn't looking." She nudged him with her elbow as they sat down.
"Thanks, but I don't think even you could help them now. It's bad." He expressed. "Like. Bad." He mouthed, dramatically.
"Well, cheer up. Homecoming's tomorrow, and I found a flask in the dressing room." She wiggled her eyebrows, hoping to cheer him up.
It didn't do much. Rhonda told her he's been groveling like a sad puppy, Caroline saw the similarities.
"I don't know. I'm not really feeling homecoming this year." His head hung low.
That didn't sit right with Caroline. Wally was always so excited for homecoming every year. Dressing up, music, dancing, all of it. It seemed wrong for him not to have the same level of interest.
"How come?" Caroline pushed her drink away.
"I think the games bumming me out, I don't know." He shook his head.
"Come on! We loose every year. Besides homecomings gonna be great this year. That kid who kept talking shit about Charley is winning homecoming king, I'm planning on spilling a drink on him before he gets up on the stage." Caroline drummed on the table.
"Yeah, and you're finally going." Wally averted his gaze.
"What's that supposed to mean? I thought you'd be psyched I'm going." She folded her hands in front of her.
Unconsciously, her mind got ready for a fight. She prepared her strategy, a million intrusive things she could say flooded her head.
She wasn't afraid of confrontation, she just wasn't herself when she felt like it was going to happen. The small weak part of herself hides away, while a stronger darker version kept her safe."It's nothing." Wally mumbled, got up, and left.
Caroline wasn't sure what to do then. She was so ready to argue, and now she just had to forget it? She choked on her thoughts as she tried to figure out what to do.
Did she forget about it like he told her? He was upset, Wally would chase after her. Wally has chased her.
Did she go after him and try to fix it? Her words were poison, she'd just make it worse. She wanted to fix it. So she went to Charley instead."Charley!" He was sitting at the top row of bleachers, braiding bracelets out of string and trying to pretend football was entertaining.
"Hey babes. What's up?" He asked, Caroline threw herself into the seat next to him.
"Wally's mad at me." She grumbled.
Charley saw he had a situation on his hands.
"What did you do?" He exasperated.
