"Arisu, do you dislike me?" Dazai asked, breaking the silence.
"No," Kanae replied, looking at her cup of tea.
"Then why do you want to avoid me?" Dazai asked.
Silence.
Dazai: *Sighs* It's fine if you admit that you don't like me.
Kanae: I don't. It's just that...I've been told to avoid you.
Dazai: Who?
Kanae doesn't reply. Dazai sighed. The bar became silent again.
"How about we play a game? 10 questions. We each ask each other 5 questions," Dazai suggested.
Kanae: And if the question is too personal?
Dazai: Then you can skip it.
Kanae: Ok. I'll go first. Question 1, how is it being Mori san's right hand man?
Dazai: Terrible. I have to be paired up with a slug.
Kanae: Seriously? That's the only reason?
Dazai: Question 2. How did you know the Mafia?
Kanae: It's my cup of tea! Totally isn't! Question 3, What's your favourite tea?
Dazai: Tea mixed with detergent. Gives the best taste!
Kanae: Uncultured! Good tea is brewed with hot water using tea leaves or tea bags.
Dazai: Not to me! Question 4, how many hats do you own?
Kanae: More than you could count. I last counted at 367. Each day a new hat, 367 hats for 367 days a year!
Dazai: Better than the pipsqueak. He wears the same old hat, no sense of style.
Kanae: Question 5, why do you like alcohol so much?
Dazai: It makes me run away from reality! Suicide may fail but alcohol doesn't.
Kanae: Using alcohol to run away? My brain can do that for me.
Dazai: Question 6, why do you like tea so much?
Kanae: Not so tasty, yet much tastier.
Dazai: You meant that you think it's tasty, right?
Kanae: So, you've decoded my code? Or have you uncoded my encoded?
Dazai: Both.
Kanae: How do you know?
Dazai: Is it question 7?
Kanae: Yes, it is.
Dazai: I just know it.
Kanae: You can't 'just know it'.
Dazai: There are things in this world that you just know it.
Kanae: Like?
Dazai: Like how you know you like tea over alcohol.
Kanae: You're not weird at all!
Dazai: You mean that I'm weird.
Kanae: You're annoying.
Dazai: I know I am. Question 8, What's your favourite tea?
Kanae: Earl grey tea, matcha, butterfly pea tea, these are my top 3 favourites. Question 9, how much alcohol do you drink in a day?
Dazai: Maybe 2, 3 glasses, sometimes even 5.
Kanae: I can never drink that much alcohol.
Dazai: Alcohol is good, it makes you forget about reality.
Kanae: For a while. After that your brain goes anti clockwise, your liver burns the candle on both sides.
Dazai: That's what you think. Last question, am I considered your friend now?
Kanae froze. She didn't know how to answer his question.
The time spent playing the 10 questions game was really fun and she got to know Dazai more.
"I guess so," Kanae replied, not knowing what else to say.
Silence.
"I better get going, it's late," Kanae said and finished her tea before leaving the bar.
"See you," Dazai whispered as he watched Kanae leave the bar.
