The train whistled as it pulled into Hogsmeade Station just as night began to fall. Lantern in hand, Hagrid made his way along the platform, towering over the crowd of robed students pouring out of the train.
"First years! This way, please!" he called.
Ron, Harry, and I had already changed into our school robes, and we made our way over to him.
"Hello, Y/n," Hagrid greeted me with a smile.
"Hey, Hagrid," I replied warmly.
Ron looked around in awe as Hagrid led us through the crowd. "Wicked," he muttered under his breath, his eyes fixed on the massive lake stretching out before us.
Hagrid pointed ahead. "Boats this way! Follow me!"
We climbed into small boats, four to each, and pushed off. The still waters rippled as we drifted forward, and then—there it was. Hogwarts Castle, towering and majestic in the distance, glowed like a beacon in the darkness. I felt something stir deep within me. This place... it already felt like home.
After we docked, we followed Hagrid up a path and through the grand doors of the castle. The entrance hall was massive, lined with flaming torches and stone walls that echoed with our footsteps. We climbed a wide staircase, and there stood a Professor, waiting on the landing above, fingers tapping the stone railing.
"Welcome to Hogwarts," she said, her voice crisp. "I am Professor McGonagall. In just a moment, you'll enter through these doors to join your classmates. But first, you will be sorted into one of four houses: Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw, or Slytherin. Your house will be like your family during your time here. Your triumphs will earn you points. Any rule-breaking, however, will cost you."
Just then, a nervous-looking boy lunged forward, shouting, "Trevor!" as he scooped up his toad near Professor McGonagall. Some of the students giggled, and he backed away, face flushed.
McGonagall gave the boy a small smile before turning to the rest of us. "The Sorting Ceremony will begin shortly," she said and walked away toward the Great Hall. But before she disappeared through the doors, she glanced back at me—just for a second—and offered a knowing, almost fond smile.
That's when I heard it.
"So the rumors are true," said a boy with pale blonde hair and a smug expression. "Y/n Grimblehawk is at Hogwarts."
Whispers stirred all around me. "Y/n Grimblehawk?"
He gestured to the two bulky boys flanking him. "This is Crabbe, and that's Goyle. I'm Malfoy. Draco Malfoy."
Ron snorted. I tried not to laugh.
Draco's lip curled. "Think that's funny? I don't need to ask your name. Red hair, hand-me-down robe—you must be a Weasley. And you—Potter. Everyone knows you."
His eyes locked on mine. "Grimblehawk... be careful who you associate with. I could help you make the right connections."
He held out his hand.
I just looked at him. "I don't need help figuring out who the wrong crowd is. No, thanks."
Ron and Harry chuckled beside me. Draco's smile vanished.
