I was woken up by the soft, hollow hooting of an owl just outside the window. Groggy, I sat up in bed and glanced toward Harry—he was still fast asleep, snoring quietly into his pillow. Typical. I slid out from under the covers, tiptoed across the room, and opened the window just wide enough to let the owl in.
It was Errol. Poor thing looked like he'd flown through a hurricane. He dropped what appeared to be a mess of letters right at my feet before collapsing unceremoniously onto the windowsill with a faint, wheezy hoot. I crouched down and picked up the pile, flipping through the envelopes. They were all addressed to Harry and me.
Hermione's handwriting caught my eye first—neat and precise, just like her. She was staying with the Weasleys at the Burrow and had written to invite us over. My eyes scanned the rest: one from Ron, two from Fred and George—those were riddled with doodles and jokes, naturally. All of them urging us to come visit as soon as we could. A grin spread across my face.
Excited, I padded over to Harry and gently shook his shoulder. "Oi, wake up, you've got mail."
He groaned and turned over, burying his face into the pillow. "Too early," he muttered, voice muffled.
I chuckled and set the letters by his bedside. "Suit yourself."
Harry grumbled something unintelligible, and I took that as permission to move on. I slipped into my slippers and headed downstairs in search of an adult—someone who could actually give us the green light to visit the Burrow.
The smell of coffee hit me the moment I reached the bottom step. In the living room, I found Sev, Lupin, and Sirius sitting around the fireplace, deep in conversation. They looked up as I entered.
"Morning, Y/n," Lupin said kindly, holding a steaming mug.
"Good morning, Bee," Sirius added with a wink.
I raised an eyebrow at him but didn't bother commenting on the nickname. Instead, I flopped down in the armchair nearest them.
"I've got letters from Ron, Hermione, and the twins," I began. "They're inviting Harry and me to the Burrow for a visit."
Sirius blinked. "Ron and Hermione?"
"Her Gryffindor friends," Sev clarified, giving Sirius a sideways look.
"Yeah," I nodded. "They said we can stay for a few days. Is it okay if we go?"
All three of them exchanged a look—one of those silent conversations adults think kids don't notice.
Then, at the exact same moment, they said, "We're coming with you."
I blinked. "Wait... what? Why?"
Sev leaned forward slightly. "You won't be going alone. Unfortunately, Harry can't come with you."
"What? Why not?" I frowned.
"Because Lily won't allow it," Lupin explained with a sigh.
I looked at Sirius. "Why?" I pressed.
He shrugged, looking a little too amused. "Can't say. Classified info."
"Oh, come on, Sirius!" I huffed, standing up and following him as he suddenly darted toward the kitchen.
