Hagrid and I made our way through the crowds at King's Cross Station, my cart rattling behind me—stacked with my luggage, school supplies, and Hedwig's cage perched on top. The closer we got to the crossing bridge, the more nervous I became. People were rushing about, dragging suitcases and calling to each other, but I couldn't stop glancing up at Hagrid. He stood out like a giant in a sea of hurried commuters. A couple walking past gave him a suspicious glare.
"What're you lookin' at?" he snapped, clearly unimpressed by their gawking. I bit back a grin.
Just then, he looked down at the watch hanging from his belt and muttered something under his breath. "Blimey, look at the time—I'm sorry, Y/n, but I've got to run. Got to meet Dumbledore for somethin' important."
He rummaged into his coat and handed me a small slip of paper—a ticket. I looked down at it and furrowed my brows.
"Platform nine and three-quarters?" I read aloud, puzzled. "Is this a joke?"
But when I looked up, Hagrid had already vanished into the crowd. Just like that, I was completely alone, standing in the middle of the station with a cart full of wizarding essentials, a confused owl, and no idea how to find a platform that didn't seem to exist.
I began pushing my cart forward, weaving between platforms and train tracks. People bustled past me, and then a man nearly collided into me as he rushed by.
"Sorry!" he called out over his shoulder, barely slowing down.
I glanced around and spotted a station guard nearby. Relief washed over me as I approached him.
"Excuse me, sir," I said politely. "Could you tell me how to get to Platform Nine and Three-Quarters?"
He looked at me like I'd grown an extra head.
"Platform what?"
"Uh... Nine and Three-Quarters," I repeated.
"Do you think you're being funny, do ya?" he scoffed, then shook his head and walked away.
"Well, geez, thanks for being so helpful," I muttered under my breath, shooting him a look as he disappeared into the crowd.
Just as I was beginning to panic, I noticed a group walking past me—a woman and her children, all pushing carts. I caught snippets of their conversation.
"It's always the same every year, packed with Muggles," the woman said.
Muggles?
That definitely sounded magical. I pushed my cart a bit closer, trying to listen in. The woman continued, "Right then, Percy, you go first."
A tall boy with glasses and red hair nodded, then—with no hesitation—ran directly at the brick wall between platforms nine and ten... and vanished right through it.
My jaw dropped.
I must have been staring, because the two identical boys—twins, also red-haired—grinned at me as they passed.
One of them winked. "Don't worry, it doesn't hurt a bit," he said.
The other added, "Unless you stop halfway through. Then it's a mess."
