Halloween Night - Great Hall
The Great Hall glittered with enchantment—floating jack-o'-lanterns bobbed gently where the candles usually hovered, casting dancing orange light over the sea of excited students. But Harry wasn't smiling.
"Where's Hermione?" he asked Neville, scanning the Gryffindor table.
Neville fiddled nervously with his pumpkin pastry. "She's... in the girls' bathroom," he mumbled. "Been there all afternoon. Y/n's with her."
Harry's brow furrowed. He turned toward Ron, who looked awkwardly away.
"I didn't think she'd take it so personally!" Ron muttered defensively.
Before Harry could retort, the doors burst open and Professor Quirrell staggered inside, pale as parchment and shaking like a leaf.
"T-troll!" he stammered, clutching the doorframe. "Troll—in the d-dungeon!"
Gasps erupted around the hall.
"And thought you ought to know..." He promptly collapsed in a heap.
A moment of stunned silence fell over the hall—then panic exploded like fireworks. Screams, overturned goblets, and the shuffle of hundreds of feet echoed as chaos took over.
"Silence!" Dumbledore's voice cut cleanly through the mayhem. "Prefects—lead your Houses back to the dormitories. Teachers, with me."
Snape's face contorted in alarm. Without a word, he turned and strode briskly out a side door.
Corridors - Moments Later
Percy Weasley marched ahead of the Gryffindors.
"Gryffindors, stay in line! Keep up and stay alert!"
Harry yanked Ron to the side. "Wait—Hermione. And Y/n. They don't know!"
Ron's face turned white. "Oh no."
They turned and dashed the other way, robes flying behind them.
Girls' Bathroom
Hermione was rinsing her face in the sink, her eyes still puffy from crying. The door creaked—and then shattered open.
She froze. A mountain of grey skin and rotting stench lumbered in. The troll's tiny eyes locked onto her as it raised its crude club.
Hermione let out a shriek, ducking into a stall just as the club came crashing down, splintering wood and tile.
Harry and Ron skidded around the corner.
"Hermione, MOVE!" Harry shouted.
"Where's Y/n?" he called as they darted inside.
Hermione peeked from under a cracked sink. "She went to get me food!"
Wood and porcelain rained around them as the troll swung wildly. Ron grabbed a pipe and chucked it. "Hey! Pea brain!"
It thudded against the troll's head. It snarled.
Hermione scurried from the wreckage. The troll spotted her and swung again, narrowly missing as she dove under another sink.
