We were up bright and early that morning—right at 8 o'clock. The Burrow was already buzzing with the usual pre-Hogwarts chaos. Molly Weasley was darting around, making sure everything was in order.
"Fred, George, Ron! Double-check your luggage! And make sure you haven't forgotten your books this time!" she shouted, while pacing back and forth across the living room.
Fred rolled his eyes. "Mum, we've got everything."
"Everything you remember," she said pointedly, not missing a beat.
George winked at me from across the room. "She's just mad she can't shrink herself and stuff herself in Ron's trunk."
Ron groaned. "Please don't give her ideas."
Upstairs, Ginny was finishing up packing the clothes Molly had neatly laid out for her the night before. I heard her rustling around in her room, muttering something about missing socks. Meanwhile, Hermione and I were already ready and sitting in the kitchen, eating a quick breakfast. She had her usual neatly packed bag sitting beside her, and I had mine by my feet.
"Think we'll make it on time this year?" I asked her, half-joking.
Hermione raised an eyebrow. "That depends on whether Fred and George remember not to bring their whole joke shop this time."
Molly stormed into the kitchen just then, flustered but focused. "Right! Let's move, everyone! The car's out front, and it's already a tight fit, so let's not dawdle!"
We all shuffled outside to the old Ford Anglia. To say it was small would've been an understatement. It was cramped.
"There's no way we're all fitting in there," I said, half-laughing.
"We've done it before," George said with a mischievous grin. "Sort of."
So I ended up sitting on George's lap, which he didn't seem to mind one bit. "Comfy?" he asked, smirking.
"I've had worse seats," I replied with a shrug. "Just don't shift around too much."
Hermione climbed in beside me, settling down awkwardly on Fred's lap. Ginny perched herself delicately on Percy's knees, and Ron—bless him—was trying not to squash Molly as he sat half-sideways on her lap.
As we were all wiggling around, trying to make space for elbows and knees, George leaned closer to me and whispered in my ear, "You might want to brace yourself—you're probably getting a concussion before we get there."
I smirked and gave him a light slap on the arm. "Keep talking and I'll knock you out so hard you'll miss the entire term."
He laughed, then said, "Fair enough."
After about fifteen minutes of uncomfortable bumping and groaning, we finally pulled into King's Cross. The sight of the station made Ginny a little anxious—she had been twirling her fingers nervously since we left the Burrow.
I reached over and gently took her hand. "You'll be fine, Gin. You've been waiting for this all year."
She looked up at me and smiled, the tension in her face softening for just a moment.
