CHAPTER TWO
I'm Not SuperhumanAlyssa was already in the lab building. She was sitting on one of the chairs at the upper level.
More people started coming in, along with Steve and Peggy, who were on the floor level. "Senator Brandt, glad you could make it." Colonel Phillips greeted the man to Alyssa's right.
"Why exactly am I in Brooklyn?" Senator Brandt questioned.
"We needed access to the city's power grid. Of course, if you'd given me the generators I requisitioned..." Colonel Phillips started.
"A lot of people are asking for funds, Colonel. Oh, this is Clem, uh..."
Alyssa looked at him, she didn't have a great feeling about the guy in her guts. Something felt off about him, and she wasn't talking about the usual asshole guy, there was something real off.
"Fred Clemson, State Department. If this project of yours comes through, we'd like to see it used for something other than headlines." Clemson said.
Senator Brandt walked over to the ledge, looking down at Steve. "Jesus. Somebody get that kid a sandwich." He said out loud to no one in particular.
Alyssa saw Peggy walk up the stairs to be beside her. "Do you hear me? Is this on? Ladies and gentlemen, today we take not another step towards annihilation, but the first step on the path of peace. We begin with a series of microinjections into the subject's major muscle groups. The serum infusion will cause immediate cellular change. And then, to stimulate growth, the subject will be saturated with Vita-Rays."
If Alyssa had to be honest, she didn't have the slightest idea of what Erskine was going on about, except that he was describing the procedure. Everyone was holding their breath, awaiting the changes. After being injected with something blue in vials, Steve was placed into a metal container. But things were getting painful and bright, Peggy continuously was telling them to shut it down.
And then Steve spoke up, "no! Don't! I can do this!"
Howard pushed it all the way to 100%. The machine started powering down, intriguing everyone. When the container opened, it revealed Steve with more visible muscle.
"The son of a bitch did it." Colonel Phillips breathed out.
Alyssa noticed Clemson stalking slowly to analyse the new super-soldier. She furrowed her brows, grabbing the pistol that was hidden in the inside of her trench coat pocket. Surely enough, something had to go wrong; there was an explosion from the windows up high, causing glass to shatter. Clemson took something, Alyssa assumed it was vials, and aimed his gun at them as he walked away.
He shot at Erskine, prompting Alyssa to shoot at Clemson out of instinct. Right after she did so, he shot her in the left shoulder blade. She did her best to hide her pain as both her and Peggy ran up the stairs at an extremely fast pace.
When the two women got outside on the streets to chase after Clemson, a car exploded, diverting their attention. When they turned back to face him, he was nowhere in sight.
"I hate it when they do that." Alyssa commented.
Peggy hid the small smirk on her face and shot at the back window of a car which held Clemson. Alyssa then did not hide her smirk and also shot at the car. Both saw him switch cars, and he was driving right towards them. Neither were going to move, and they would have been dead if Steve hadn't of pushed them out of the way to save their lives.
"I had him!" Peggy exclaimed.
"Sorry!" Steve apologised, running to chase after the man. He didn't seem to understand his new speed limits of running.
—
After the spot in the newspaper that celebrated Steve saving a boy and catching the man, they were now in a base being patched up. Steve was having more tests run on him, while Alyssa was in a tank top due to her shoulder needing attention, which she couldn't attend to. She might be one of the best pilots the Royal Air Force has, but she was a shit medic.
"Think you got enough?" Steve asked dryly to the nurse.
"Any hope of reproducing the program is locked in your genetic code. But without Dr. Erskine, it would take years." Peggy explained to him as Alyssa winced at the cloth cleaning her wound.
"He deserved more than this." Steve stated.
"If it could work only once, he'd be proud it was you." Peggy assured him, giving him a smile.
Steve turned to look at Alyssa. "How are you, Lieutenant Collins?" He asked, gesturing to her shoulder.
"I'm fine. You get used to getting hurt after a while, but it still feels a little bit like shit." Alyssa admitted, wincing once again when the wound was covered with gauze.
Steve tried to hide his surprise upon hearing her swear. He wasn't used to hearing anyone swear in public. Alyssa buttoned up her white blouse, unbothered by the fact that she was shot.
Steve just checks in with everyone at some point
Alyssa is tired of getting shot by people at this point
Okay, bye!
