Dad and I were complicated to say the least. He was still the most important person in my world. I'm struggling, he ruined my perfect image I had of him. I guess it was bound to happen right. I had that same image of my hero dad since I was little. It was how my mother told me how awesome he was when he was in the army. It was somewhat the same for her. Except I clutched the image mum created of him to avoid missing me as much, even if I still missed her a tone.
He dropped me off like always, making me promise not to be abducted by my uncle. Turns out your mother coming back from a war zone wasn't a good enough excuse to not go to school. "So library or art rooms" Emilia asks coming up beside me causing me to shrug. "Are you ok" she asks making me nod "yeah yeah everything is weird with dad right now" "right forgot you caught him and Erin hey look at the positives at least you didn't actually catch them in the act I have done that with dad and one of his many mistresses it scared me" I laugh at her mortified face "I had the same dream as you it crumbled when I caught dad with whatever her name was and I know your struggling it" "I think dads making it worse because his eyes light up at the mention of mum" "he still loves her" Emilia shrugs "that's what makes it worse" "hey maybe now she's here you'll get your dream" I smile at her I open my mouth to speak but a loud bag stops me. "If the science labs weren't behind us I would assume it was just a science explosion" I nod both of us glued to our spots. It was like everyone was listening to. Another sound went off making me jump backwards. "Art rooms art rooms" Emilia said grabbing my wrist practically dragging me down the hall. "Those weren't gun shots" I said once's we were inside "how do you know" a random kid in the room said looking at me "her dads a cop like mine only hers takes her to the shooting range on occasion" Emilia answered looking at me "are you sure maybe it could be a different type" "no no it wasn't and I don't know a gun that takes that long for the second shot the click and shoot usually takes a few seconds that was like ten minutes it wasn't a gun" I was certain. Like a drill a seemingly never ending sound fills our ears. "That's a gun that's a gun" Emilia said as we all move into the storage room, turning all the lights off barricading the door.
I fiddle with my phone, my hands shaking. "The light from your phone" a girl whispered "she turned the brightness all the way down shut up" Emilia snapped. I put my phone to my ear. "Aren't you meant to be in class" "I love you" I whisper as quiet as I can "what's wrong Ally" mum asks I can't help but flinch at the repeated drilling. Emilia flinching into me. "Is that...tell me your safe" "we're in the art room" "ok ok move everything to the door and get behind all the books" she said I could hear her moving.
The phone was silent but that didn't stop Sam from telling Alice all kinds of loving things. She knew her daughter would have it quiet enough that no matter how loud she was no one would hear. She pulled up to the school to see police everywhere. She didn't park her car she just jumped out. The cops tried to stop her "Jay" she yelled and thankfully he heard. He gestured for the cop to let her through "I can't talk right now Sam" "I know I know our daughter is in there" "don't you think I know that" the look in his eyes told Sam he would run into the building the moment everyone turned there back. Sam just held up the phone confusing him. Putting it to his ear all he heard was breathing. Don't ask how. Maybe it was all the hours the breathing calmed him and practically lulled him to sleep. He looked at Sam who nods telling him it's exactly who he thought it was. "She's with Emilia in the art room" he nods. "Hey ally I love you" Jay said watching Sam. He grabbed her when they heard shots from inside the school. No cops were inside yet, they had not long pulled up. "Sam Sam hey focus on the breathing I need you to focus on her not everything else...I know you want to but right now you can't" Jay said said putting the phone to Sam's ear. "I'm going to give you a radio and I want you to stay here listening to this...I'm going to go in and get our girl you need to tell me when it gets loud" "ok...wait what about you" "I'll be fine" Sam didn't realise how bad the ptsd really was. Sure she saw him in his aftermath but it was worse when it's you. Sam nods "hey give her a radio" Jay told a random cop. "I'll get our girl" Jay said kissing Sam's head before jogging over and joining the cops that were starting to enter the building. The gunshots were echoing closing following by even louder explosions.
"Dad is almost there baby" it calmed me. My phone tilted so Emilia heard it as well. Our heads touching. Our arms around each other. We were giving each other everything, it was the only thing we could do. I could hear shots it felt like they were everywhere. "We can't stay here" the guy said. I didn't know anyone but Emilia. I had seen them around school but that's it. Emilia probably knew them, she knows everyone. "No no we can't" I said shaking my head but my words fell upon deaf ears. The three left trying to find safety. Emilia knew the rules. Our dads always told us to always stay hidden. Together we both move and try two hide ourselves.
