"Calvin is doing great. He is still asleep, but will wake in the next few hours. We set his arm, but he'll be in a cast for the next few months. His ribs are wrapped to help keep them in place, and we splinted and packed his nose."

Olivia felt as tears streamed down her cheeks, as her worry faded away. Calvin was alive and out of surgery. He would be on the mend and sleeping in his own bed in no time.

"What about his liver?" Rafael asked, since Olivia was too relieved to ask questions.

"The doctor repaired the injury to it. We will have to monitor him closely for signs of infection or a recurrence, but we are hopeful. Would you two like to see him?"

Rafael looked at Olivia, before reaching out and gently caressing her cheek.

"Liv, do you want to go see Calvin?" Rafael breathed. Olivia nodded quickly, her hand reaching up and taking his hand in hers.

"Yes, please."

Rafael hadn't planned to follow Olivia upstairs to the recovery room, but she wouldn't let go of his hand, so he had no other choice. They reached the large recovery room before being led down a row to where Calvin was laying.

"Oh, Calvin," Olivia whispered, as she looked over her bruised and pale little boy. She couldn't believe that she didn't fight harder to get him into a new school. That she just let Tiffany force her to send him back to a place that could have taken his life.

"I'll get another chair for you, sir. Please, just keep your voices low, and we will be in to check on Calvin every half hour until he wakes up," a nurse smiled. She left the curtained area as Olivia lowered herself onto a chair beside Calvin's bed.

Her hand gently brushed his mess of brown hair away from his forehead before she leaned forward and kissed his bruised cheek.

"I'll never let anyone hurt you again, Calvin. I'm so sorry that I couldn't prevent this," Olivia whispered, pain flashing across her face.

"Liv, this wasn't your fault," Rafael breathed, from where he stood on the other side of Calvin's bed.

"You don't know that, Rafael. I'm a cop, and I still couldn't protect the one human I'm constantly in charge of... I feel like shit," Olivia grumbled as she locked eyes with Rafael.

"I would have known if you hadn't pushed me away..." Rafael sighed. Olivia swallowed hard and dropped her eyes.

"We may have just kissed again, but you'll never completely forgive me for pushing you away... There is no point in you being here. Just go away before Calvin wakes up and thinks we are together. He doesn't need to be hurt more by this," Olivia snapped.

Rafael moved the curtain away to leave, but stopped. He walked around the foot of the bed and grabbed Olivia's hand. He squeezed it tightly and looked into her eyes.

"I want you, and I think you want me too. Stop fighting and just accept the fact someone loves you and wants to be with you. You need help to take care of Calvin as he is recovering, and I'll be that man," Rafael spoke sternly. Olivia turned to look up at him.

"W-what?"

"I love you, Olivia. Even if you are the biggest pain in my ass."

It took about three hours before Calvin woke up. When he finally opened his eyes, Olivia and Rafael were sitting beside his bed. He blinked a few times before coughing. Olivia woke up quickly and leaned forward to look at the little boy in the bed.

"Hey, sweetie. How are you?" Olivia asked, her eyes still full of sleep, but a smile spread on her lips.

"Am I okay?" Calvin asked.

"Yeah, baby. You are okay. It'll be awhile before you will feel better or normal, but everything will be okay," Olivia smiled softly.

"What about the boys?" He asked weakly.

"I haven't checked my phone in a while, so I don't know. But we can wait to know what is happening at the school."

Calvin nodded hesitantly before looking over at Rafael. He then turned back to face Olivia.

"Who is he again?"

"That's Rafael Barba... he is the man that made me cry before... But I think we are good right now. He's going to help us out while you recover, if that is okay."

"I don't care," Calvin replied, before reaching out to Olivia. She stood and sank down onto the edge of the bed. Olivia caressed Calvin's hair as he leaned heavily on her.

It didn't take nearly as long as people expected for Olivia and Calvin to fall into an almost mother and son relationship. Calvin trusted Olivia and knew she'd protect him to the best of her ability, and he didn't hate her for what happened at the school. Olivia felt her first maternal connection to a child, but she was scared that soon he'd be taken away. Maybe Tiffany was lying and the attack at the school would be blamed completely on Olivia, or Vivian may even catch wind of the situation and decide to take her son back.

"Am I going to be taken away by Ms. Owens?" Calvin whispered, as he held Olivia's hand and played with her fingers. Olivia leaned down and kissed his mop of brown hair before shaking her head.

"No, kid. I think we are stuck with each other for a while longer... As long as you are fine with that. Okay?"

"Mom never made me feel this safe... or loved," Calvin whispered.
