I have known some of my greatest friends since I was born. I have known some for only a year, or a few months. To me, it isn't the time that defines to what extend a friend is great to a person, but rather the meaning within that time, no matter how small. The fact that someone sticks with you longer after you meet them, even in times when it wasn't to their benefit or convenience-- now that holds the most meaning to me.
