Jumping on trains seems easy to me now, natural. It won't be as easy for Parker, but we can't stop now. I look over my left shoulder and see the headlights burning gold against the gray buildings and roads. I bounce on the balls of my feet as the lights grow larger and larger, and then the front of the train glides past me, and I start jogging. When I see an open car, I pick up my pace to keep stride with it and grab the handle on the left, swinging myself inside.
Getting onto the train that took us from the centre to dauntless we stayed standing, waiting impatiently for the train to reach dauntless.
"We're lucky we made it out alive there." Parker breathed.
"That was only the beginning." I replied.
He looked worried but I gave a reassuring shoulder to him.
The glass building above the Pit reflects sunlight into my eyes. I stand, holding the handle next to the door for balance. Almost there.
"You're not going to like this." As I straightened my posture to see that we were at the building.
"What do you mean?"
I pushed open the doors and wasted no time to jump out.
I looked to see Parker still on the train.
"Oh, fuck it!" Parker said before jumping out of the train as he screamed in mid-air.
I couldn't help but smirk at his screams but now wasn't the time.
We ran across the gravel building until we reached the hole that led us to our entrance point.
I stood on top of the pillar.
"There's a net at the bottom. Don't think, just jump." I replied before jumping off the building and landing onto the net.
Parker followed, jumping down until he landed on the net and panted as he got up from the net.
"You good?" I asked him.
"Never better." He smiled back.
As we continued down the corridor, we stopped just before the opening of the pit.
I turn to the side and press my back to the stone wall. I shuffle quickly sideways, one foot crossing over the other, squinting to see through the semidarkness. Another gunshot fires into silence. I reach the last light and stand for a moment in shadow, letting my eyes adjust.
I can't win a fight, but if I can move fast enough, I won't have to fight. My footsteps light, I lean over past the wall to see dark hair that always gleams, even in relative darkness, and a long nose with a narrow bridge.
It's Peter.
Cold slips over my skin and around my heart and into the pit of my stomach.
His face is tense—he isn't a sleepwalker. He looks around, but his eyes search the air above me and beyond me.
"Against the wall. Against the wall!" I yelled at him not feared to put a gun to his chest.
His hands were raised up as he backed up.
"Why are you awake?"
"Because I'm smarter than you." He smart mouthed.
"Doubtful." I replied.
"And they need me." He finished.
"Where are they controlling it from?"
"Why would I tell you that? It's not like you're going to shoot me?" He challenged.
"Try me." I said with a straight face as I shot him in the arm.
He groaned as he dropped to the ground.
"Help us and if you don't your leg is next."
Parker appeared from the corner and stood next to me.
"Did you really need to shoot him?" Parker asked me.
"It's either that or an abnegation dies or a dauntless member becomes a murderer." I turned to him.
I pushed Peter back up to his feet and shoved his back so he could start walking us towards the control room.
He followed us up the stairs leading us to the same place I saw my mum at that day.
We hid behind the wall.
"That's where it is?" I asked Peter.
"Yeah." He managed to say, holding his arm.
"I've seen mum go in there before." I look to Parker.
Parker walks in front of us before taking my gun.
"There isn't a second to waste."
Parker stood out in front as we followed behind him, initiating the gun shots, shooting each one down. All of us helped.
All of the guards fell down as I looked around them to look for any clues.
"Make sure Peter, here doesn't mess around, I'm going in!" I say, grabbing my gun off Parker before opening the door and disappearing.
