"You're Crazy." He told me, watching as I pulled my hair into a ponytail before wrapping it under the helmet.
"You think I'm crazy?" My voice was barely above a whisper, he had every right to think I was crazy but it was one of my biggest fears.
"I don't think it. I know it." He replied, his eyes holding mine as I admired the green "And I want every last bit of your craziness."
I rolled my eyes "So cheesy, the sooner we get this over with the sooner I will be less crazy, I'm just scared."
"Don't be scared Ev, there's no reason to be, you deserve to be on that track today as much as everyone else." Charles admitted to me as he pulled on his drivers overalls, today was the first day of the formula one 2024 season in Bahrain.
Fred entered the room not bothering to knock, "Are my drivers ready for interviews?" He asked to which I stuck up my thumbs, since November one of the Ferrari mechanics had made a device to make my voice sound different when I had the helmet on.
So I could now respond to questions.
"I feel like this makes me sound British Fred." I told him laughing as I tried to get used to my fake voice, truly not understanding the engineering behind it all.
Fred held his finger up "Remember Evelyn, no name reveal, no age reveal, no nothing. Charles is she gets confused answer for her you know the drill."
Yes Fred, I won't tell the world how you blackmailed me into driving for you.
Before the race we had an hour of interviewers to get through, my appearance in formula one sent quite a shockwave through the support hence everyone had questions for the anonymous driver.
One of the Ferrari managers reminded me "Oh and Evelyn we have the paparazzi photos to be released during the race, as promised."
As I didn't have a fool proof reason to not be at the races we had done professional shoots since late November to release during Grand Prix weekends so that it appeared I was just out and about or at an actual professional shoot.
"You'll be okay Evs." Charles whispered to my ear as we walked out onto the stage overlooking hundreds of Ferrari fans, we were finally taking fan questions an hour before the race.
"Introducing our two Ferrari drivers for this season, Charles Leclerc and the anonymous racer." A guy shouted as Charles and I walked on the stage, the crowd around us creating an up rawr of noise.
I waved affirming my helmet was on securely and my visor down, this was going to get exhausting, microphones were passed to each of us as we sat down in the chairs on stage ready for questions.
"Okay so we will get right into it, the most anticipated questions of today, so question one is for the mystery formula one driver." The interviewer man stated which I nodded along to.
Let's pray my media training is coming in handy and I've memorised all the rehearsed answers I'm supposed to give.
"Hi I'm Kate, and I think it's a huge inspiration to have a female formula one driver on the grid but I wanted to know why, like many others you choose to keep your identity a secret?"
As predicted.
I let out a breathe, my voice changer ready to go into action "Hi! Thank you for the question, truthfully I'm a very private person, like sitting here and answering questions is very daunting to me and I like privacy, I've seen how the other drivers deal with life and fame and it's honestly a struggle, so privacy is just ideal for me."
"Hello I'm Sara, my question is for the anonymous driver, will you ever reveal your identity? Surely it's harder to not expose it."
I shrugged "Um who knows maybe one day, perhaps I will get sick of the helmet and stuff but for now I'm happy with how it is."
"Hi I'm Paul, my question is for Charles, how is it having a new driving partner, it was obvious how close you were with Carlos Sainz how does that compare now?"
Charles shrugged, "Carlos is one of my best friends, an incredible driver also so it was sad to lose him but he's going to do great things for Aston Martin. My new partner has quickly become one of my best friends also, she's incredible on the track and out of the track so it doesn't really compare."
"Charles are you dating Evelyn Wolff?" Someone shouted out from the crowd, making me chuckle a little internally.
"Maybe." He replied laughing.
"I'm Phil my question is for the anonymous driver, have you ever actually beaten Charles before or any of the other drivers? Like what's your history?"
"I've been driving for forever, since I was little I was karting around. I have never been in formula four, three or two or the academy as many have suspected I was just incredibly lucky to be here today. I've beaten nine of the formula one drivers in a race I'm not sure how aware of that they are though, so take that how you will."
"Do you seriously think you can best people as a woman?" This guy continued despite the fact once you've asked your question you're supposed to move on.
I didn't even know what to say, I was just pissed so it didn't take Charles long to respond for me "Why does it always come down to gender? She's a great driver and she could beat me with ease today, but you'd probably put it down to me having a bad day or something because she happens to be a female. The internalised misogyny around motorsport needs to stop, now."
I love you Charles, so so much.
Within half an hour the open fire questions were over and we were ready to race, my first ever formula one race, "You'll be fine Ev, you're stressing out I can see it." Charles told me once again as I sat in the car getting a feel for the pedals as if I hadn't done it hundreds of times.
I nodded "I need to do well."
"You will, you need to believe in yourself more. The team is all behind you today, and so many girls have been more involved in formula one now and they're all watching just for you." He told me thinking he was being helpful, but really he was just stressing me out more.
