Coffee shop AU"Coffee?"
Nico's P.O.V
The snow was falling quickly, making sure to coat everything in sight. The cross-walk was buried too far to be recognizable, but I figured the police wouldn't put a jaywalking teen as their top priority in this weather. There was sure to be an accident somewhere caused by the wicked weather.
A chill ran down my spine, making me even more aware of the thinness of my sweater. I wished I had grabbed some gloves this morning before setting out on a walk. My frigid fingers found their way to each other in an attempt to capture whatever heat was left in them. I let out a puff as I noticed the snow beginning to pick up its pace on its way down to the earth. It looked like I had to either catch a cab, which I really couldn't afford after paying for my books for next semester, or find a little cafe where I could wait out the snow. The choice really wasn't that difficult when I noticed a cozy coffee shop a few buildings down. I hurried over, hands beginning to shake with cold and maybe a little bit in the anticipation of much needed caffeine. (Not that I was addicted or anything.)
The door opened with a little chime that was pleasing to my ears, before I laid eyes on the most attractive man I'd ever seen. He was tall, his lean frame seeming to be reaching for the moon, with soft blond hair, and kind blue eyes. A small scar was visible on his face, but instead of taking away from his beauty, it showed his human side and made him even more appealing.
As soon as I'd registered just how attractive he was, my anxiety set in. Of course, that was the moment the attractive employee asked what I would like.
"Uh... I-do you have coffee?" I stumbled for a few seconds before asking, probably, the stupidest question of my life. Of course a coffee shop would serve coffee...
The man quirked an eyebrow. "Coffee?" He turned to look behind him at the menu board before turning back to me. "It appears that you are in luck, we do happen to serve coffee."
His smile scrambled my thoughts. "That's... I mean... Sugar?"
"Yes, we also happen to have sugar, would you like milk as well?" The man asked with amusement in his eyes. I simply nodded, not trusting my words anymore. He punched something in on the register before looking back at me. "That'll be three bucks."
I reached into my pocket and pulled out the loose change I'd accumulated throughout the week. "One...two...three." I counted the coins before dropping the change in the counter in front of him.
He scooped the coins up before beginning to sort them into their respective spots in the register. "You know, it just so happens that I'm taking a rather challenging math class and you appear to be quite good at counting, maybe you could find time in your busy schedule to help out a fellow student?"
I shook my head in amazement. "I'm not all that g-good at math..."
"I don't believe you." The man smiled before closing the register. "But then again, it's difficult to believe someone who's name you don't even know."
"Are you asking f-for my n-name?" I tried not to stutter, but it wasn't effective.
"I'm Jason, if you needed an example of how to introduce yourself." He smirked as he began to pour my coffee.
I struggled to control my blush. "Nico."
"Pardon?" Jason asked, pausing in the middle of pouring my coffee.
"My name is Nico." I repeated, pleased with myself that I hadn't stuttered.
Jason continued pouring. "Nico... That's a lovely name, and I'm sure you're just as lovely to live up to it."
I wasn't sure if he was flirting, or teasing. "I'm n-not all that l-lovely..."
"Once again, I don't believe you." Jason smiled as he sprinkled some sugar into my coffee.
I felt my ears beginning to burn at the tips. I felt a surge of self-confidence and decided to use it. "Where do you g-go to school?"
Jason's whole face lifted at my question. "Just a small community college a few blocks away, what about you?"
"The arts institute." I replied, feeling my anxiety beginning to slip away the more comfortable I got. "I'm studying art and art history."
Jason added the milk into my coffee and stirred a few times before slipping the lid on and passing it to me. "Art history? I never pegged you as that kind of person. Do you paint?"
I shook my head. "Not often, I focus on drawing." I took a sip of the warm drink and felt my muscles beginning to relax. I turned to go sit down when Jason called out.
"Hey, Nico, I'm on my break in ten minutes, would you mind company as you drink your coffee?"
I felt my cheeks begin to turn red again. "Company? It depends on the person."
"Hypothetically, if that person happened to answer to the name of Jason..." He started with a grin.
I smiled, knowing this would either be the start of something wonderful, or something embarrassing. "Then I guess I won't mind some company."
I began to walk to a table near the window, but I heard Jason mumble. "I thought you wouldn't."
