Jasico one-shot
"Saving cats is manly!"
Jason's P.O.V
The tights were something else. The neon yellow certainly helped me look the part, but they made me feel itchy and uncomfortable. The light blue underwear that I wore on top didn't do anything to help the situation. My darker blue skin-tight long sleeve shirt may have helped people see my muscles (as my sister had told me) but it didn't exactly have a place to put my phone, which sucked. I had a short neon yellow Cape that flapped behind me in the wind, but once again, it made me feel like a man in a costume, which I guess I was. I liked to call the whole get-up a suit, but my sister made sure to reassure me of its costume-look.
You see, in this world, at the age of sixteen, you must choose whether or not to fight for Good or Evil, two rival sides that have been fighting for centuries. After making your pick, you enter your name, picture, and a short quiz into the agency and they select your career. Some people get to live mundane lives and work regular jobs like musicians or bankers, like my art student sister. Others, like me, get selected to participate in the fight against evil.
When I first got selected, I thought I'd be taking part in epic battles, but after my first mission, I knew that my hero filled dreams weren't going to happen. All I'd had to do was help an old lady cross a busy street, and the traffic wasn't even that bad!
Now, after working the super hero gig for a few years, I was ready to believe that there wasn't really any of the Evil villains left. Sure, I'd never seen anyone choose Evil over Good, but there was a rumour going around that some kid has mysteriously left the ceremony after making his choice a few years back. A lot of people assumed he'd just died, but there was a select few who believed he'd been taken by the Evil leaders, and I was one of those select few.
I figured this kid was biding his time, just waiting for us to become lax in security, before making his big move. But I never expected his big move to be climbing a tree to hold a cat hostage...
"What are you doing?" I yelled up to him, getting ready to just fly up there using my chemically-induced powers.
Before I could even move, the boy shouted a reply. "I'm holding this cat hostage, what does it look like?"
"Can I ask why?"
The boy smirked. "I think you just did."
"Fine, well, who's cat is it?" I demanded, before jumping off and lifting myself to the branch just opposite him.
"That's classified." The boy replied, using his free hand to grip the tree even harder.
I cocked an eyebrow. "I'm guessing you didn't really take him hostage. I'm guessing he's actually your cat, and you came up here to rescue him before getting stuck up here, am I right?"
The boy cursed quietly for a few seconds. "Whatever, just help me get down, I've got important business to get to."
"Really? What's so important that you can't stay for a bit and chat?" I teased, noticing his worrying glances to the ground down below.
The boy bit his lip. "Uh, I'm actually late for a very important meeting."
"Are you really? Who is it that you're meeting, a girl perhaps?"
He scrunched up his nose. "No."
"Ah, so it's boys that you're into." I smiled, seeing his cheeks go red.
He looked at me defiantly. "What? You got a problem with that?"
"Me? No, I couldn't seeing as I'm gay too." I admitted, seeing him wince at the g word.
He pulled the fluffy cat closer to his chest, looking even more insecure and worried by the minute. "I told you all you wanted to know, now can you please get me down?"
"I'll get you and Mr.Fluffy down as soon as you tell me your name." I smirked.
Unexpectedly, he paled and began to shake a little. "T-that's not a good idea."
"Why not, you're not some criminal are you?" I joked, but widened my eyes when his shaking intensified. "Alright, I'll get you down, just try to relax."
He took in a deep breath as I slipped my hands under his armpits, before whispering to me. "Please don't tell the agency, I promise that I didn't have a choice to join Evil."
I set him down and watched as his shaking legs wobbled before collapsing underneath him. He gave a sad chuckle as we watched his cat scamper off. "I should escort you to the agency right now, but you seem like a pretty good guy so I'll give you the chance to explain."
"Alright, thanks." He took another deep breath before continuing. "I had just lost my sister the week before the choosing ceremony, and wasn't in a particularly good mood when I had to take my pick. I didn't see a point in living if I had to live alone, so I picked Evil in hopes that the agency would just get rid of me, I never expected the leader of Evil to come for me before the agency got the chance. He looked like your worst nightmare in a single body with eyes that stared deep into your soul. He took me back to his lair and jabbed so many needles into me I couldn't keep track. He trained me using cruel and unusual punishments until one day I just snapped. I used all my combat training that he'd taught me and used it against him. He died shortly after my knife entered his chest."
"So then what? You've been hiding out here, stealing food and necessities?" I was genuinely curious for his answer.
He snarled. "Of course not. I got a job at a gas station and tried to live a normal life. Guess normal people don't climb up trees after their cats though..."
"Yeah, generally people just call people like me to do the work for them, not that you were doing that bad of a job. I'm sure after a few hours you'd have figured out a way to get down."
A small smile filled his face. "Heights and water just aren't my thing, though saving cats from trees isn't exactly what I thought superheroes were supposed to do. Doesn't seem very manly to me..."
"Saving cats is manly!"
He snorted. "Not when you're dressed like that. How am I supposed to take you seriously in that?"
I flexed my biceps. "Am I manly now?"
I saw a flash of want shoot through his eyes. "Maybe a little bit."
"Only a little? Maybe I should take you out to coffee and tell you all about how manly I can be?"
The boy looked surprised before smiling. "Alright, I'll go with you for coffee if you tell me your name."
"Using my own words against me? Aren't you clever..." I smirked. "The name's Jason."
"I'm Nico Di Angelo, and I drink my coffee black."
I reached out and took his hand. "Noted."
