Nico's P.O.V
The soft rain didn't even bother me anymore. My roommate had bundled me up in at least three layers, making sure I didn't catch a cold. I had told him that the cold never bothered me anyway, to which he had thrown a pillow at me before snorting so hard that milk came up his nose.
Overall, my morning was shaping up to be pretty good. There hasn't even been a line at my favourite coffee shop. Now, with my piping hot coffee in hand, I was making my way towards my first class.
The university was huge, but luckily all of the music buildings were close together. It was, however, unfortunate that my dorm just so happens to be on the complete other side of campus from them. My teachers had already grown accustom to me running in late, so I didn't even try to pick up my pace as the giant bell that sounded every hour went off.
After nipping into my classroom, and slinking all the way to my seat in the back, I was mildly surprised to see someone sitting in it. I had been coming to this class all year, and all of the sudden some guy with beautiful eyes decides to just steal my spot? Just because his hair is flawless doesn't mean he's allowed to get away with anything.
In my head, I imagined dropping my books and dumping my coffee over his head. I visualized myself picking him up my his jacket collar and flinging him against the wall. I saw myself dramatically shoving his books off the desk before victoriously taking my seat back.
Instead, I ducked my head and slipped into the seat beside him.
Ever since I was younger, I had been told that I had an active imagination, but I seriously doubted anyone actually knew how often I used it. When I was in elementary school, I found myself getting sucked into amazing battles with mythical beasts. I'd be seconds away from slicing off a hellhound's head when I'd hear my name being called by my teacher and be sucked right back into the present. Everyone always laughed and just passed it off as being bored in class, but I knew that it was more than that. As I got older, the visions got worse. I'd be walking along the sidewalk before suddenly being locked in combat with a hydra. I could hear it's horrible cry. I could smell its acidic scent. I thought it was real, up until someone was shaking my shoulder and yelling at me to stop messing around. It got so bad, that I would be spending more of my day in my imaginary world than in the real one. As bad as it was out in public, it was worse at home. After my parents had pegged me as a daydreamer, they chose to interact with me as little as possible. I'd spend most of my nights locked up in my room, trying to figure out what was real, and what was fake.
It was purely by accident that I discovered the piano. It had been a warm spring day and my parents had gone out for the day to soak up the sun. I had wandered out of my room and had found myself in the music room. I had heard my mother play the piano a few times over the years, but for some reason, I'd never put it together that it had meant that we owned a piano. I was worried I'd get sucked into another vision before I got the chance to try it out, so I scrambled to the bench and placed my fingers over the keys.
At first, I pressed random keys as fast as I could to try to get at least a little taste of its music before getting sucked into a vision, but after two minutes, I relaxed a little and began to actually try to string a few notes together in an attempt to play something beautiful. I tried a plethora of different combinations, cringing at each attempt. In what I thought was a few minutes, I was able to play a few different notes that sounded beautiful together, so when I looked up and saw that the sun was setting, I was amazed. I had gone a whole day without being sucked into any visions. I looked back down to where my fingers still rested on the keys. I had gotten so lost in the music that my mind hadn't had time to come up with new monsters for me to battle. That was the day that I learned that music helped me stay in the present.
The teacher let us go early, much to my relief. I hadn't gotten a chance to use the school's private music room in a few days and I was anxious to practice my new piece. In all my haste to get there, I didn't even notice the boy in front of me. One second I was heading towards the door, the next, I was on the ground. I looked up and noticed that the boy had knelt down and had begun to collect my music books.
"You alright there? I thought you were going to kill me earlier when I took your seat by mistake."
"Mistake?"
The boy laughed a little as I got back on my feet. "Yeah, I was in a rush to get there on time and accidentally took the seat beside mine."
"Oh." I felt my eyebrow rise. "You sit beside me usually?"
The boy's grin faded away. "Yeah. You let me borrow a pencil on the fist day of classes, remember?"
I didn't but I nodded anyways. "Of course."
The boy handed me my books. "I can't help but ask about your handwritten piece that you dropped." He gestured to one of the sheets of paper that had fallen when I ran into him.
"It's inspired by greek mythology." I muttered, knowing that he'd finally realize how much of a nerd I am and leave.
To my surprise, a huge grin lit up his face. "Greek mythology? That's what I'm minoring in! Who's your favourite God?"
I froze for a second, wondering if this somehow happened to be another of my crazy visions. "My favourite God?"
"Yeah, mine's Apollo. He seems pretty chill, and he's the God of music so that's a bonus." The boy used his hands when he spoke, and I found myself liking his enthusiasm.
I smiled. "I like Hades, I mean, he really got the short end of the stick when Zeus got the sky and Poseidon got the water. He gets stuck with the dead, and from what I gather, they're not a lively crowd."
"Was that a death joke? You just keep on surprising me, Nico." The boy chuckled.
I found myself returning to the earth from cloud nine. "Would it be totally awful if I said I don't know your name?"
The boy shook his head. "Nah, you seem like the type to get so interested in something that you don't notice the little things happening around you." He held up his hand for me to shake. "I'm Will."
I accepted his handshake. "I'm Nico."
"I know." Will chucked. "So, where are you headed?"
I fiddled with the bookmark from my textbook. "The private music room."
"Would you be against an audience?" Will asked, with a sunshine bright smile on his face.
I pretended to debate it for a few seconds. "Alright, but you owe me a coffee afterwards."
"That sounds great." Will replied as we walked over to the private room together, silently wondering if this was the start of something beautiful.
