Frazel
Hazel’s P.O.V
The moment he was out of sight, my façade crumbled. I fell to my knees and felt a few tears leave my eyes. This was the second big quest Frank had to go on without me, and after he almost died the last time, I was a bit reluctant to watch him leave again. I know that Frank is a strong guy who’s very capable of defeating monsters, but sometimes it’s like he goes out of his way to sacrifice himself. Doesn’t he know how much I need him?
I slowly rose from the ground and wiped away the few tears that had escaped. I was stronger than this. I needed to be stronger than this. I retraced my steps back to the Hades cabin where I was currently staying. I cracked open the door and slid inside. It was dark, but when wasn’t it in the Hades cabin? Believe it or not, that was one of my favourite things about it. For me, the dark was a blanket. It comforted me and gave me a sense of security. Just like Frank… I shook my head to clear all thoughts of him out of my mind.
I crept past my older brother who had his eyes closed. I knew he was awake by the sound of his music that seeped through his headphones and into the room. I don’t think I’ll ever understand how something that loud can be calming. As the loud music that sounded to me like people screaming for assistance kept playing, I made my way into the spare bunk that Nico had saved for me. As I slid the covers over me, I couldn’t help but think back to a few nights ago when I had fallen asleep during the night picnic we had gone on, and Frank had carried me back here and tucked me into bed. I didn’t even notice that I was crying until Nico was standing over me with a worried expression on his face. Without a word, he sat down beside me and pulled his headphones over my head. This time, a soft song came on. It was a quiet little tune, and the artist had a voice that seemed to lull me to sleep. By the time the song was over, I could barely keep my eyes open. I remember seeing Nico slip the headphones off of me, and then the world went black.
I woke up the next morning to an empty cabin. Sometimes I wonder if Nico sleeps at all. I pulled off the blankets and walked over to the spare dresser that Nico let me keep my stuff in. I pulled out a sweater and some leggings and carried them into the bathroom with me.
After my shower, I pulled the sweater on and slipped on my leggings. I tugged a brush through my hair and then pulled it into a high pony tail. Deciding to simply skip breakfast, I exited the cabin and made my way towards the forest. I took a few deep breaths, inhaling the scents of the forest, while choosing where to sit. In the end I chose a spot in the base between two old trees that had grown at odd angles, resulting in a small flat area that was slightly raised from the ground. I leaned my back against one of the trunks while placing my legs on the other side of the platform that the trees created. I closed my eyes and tried to relax. Every time I was even remotely close, something interrupted me. First it was the loud chirping of the birds, then it was the crunching of branches by the squirrels. After a little while, I decided that I wouldn’t be able to relax here. I rose from my specially selected spot, and left in search of another spot. Maybe the beach would be less noisy…
As it ended up, the beach was worse. The waves were so loud it was like there were horses thundering towards me every few seconds. And then there was Percy. He had picked this time to take Annabeth to the beach to have a huge water fight. After almost an hour of putting up with this, I left to get some lunch.
The pavilion was almost empty since I was almost an hour early, so I got myself a small bowl of gumbo and ate silently at the Hades table. I was just finishing when people started showing up for lunch, so I scarfed the rest of it down and left in search of peace and quiet.
I thought I would try the strawberry fields, but apparently so did Grover and Juniper. They were sitting on a picnic blanket laughing loudly. Juniper was dressed really nicely, so I figured it was probably a date. They still hadn’t noticed me, so I snuck away quickly. Perhaps Nico will have left the cabin empty…
I slowly opened the cabin door and entered. The main room was empty, but the bathroom door was closed with the soft sounds of water from the shower coming from under the door, meaning Nico was here. At least I could have a few minutes of quiet while he was in the shower. I lied down on my temporary bunk and closed my eyes. At first it was good, just the soft sounds of water, but that’s when things went south. Out of nowhere, I heard a loud sound come from the bathroom. It was a scream, and I was certain it came from Nico’s lips. I jumped out of bed, and was about to burst through the bathroom door, but stopped when the screams formed their way into words of the song I had heard Nico listening to last night. He was singing in the shower… I had never pegged him as the shower singing type. As funny as it was, I knew I wouldn’t be getting any peace here, so I quickly made my bunk, and left the cabin. I was beginning to think that there was no place in this camp where I could relax.
The day that Frank was set to come back had finally come. It had been a long hard week without him, but now I could finally see him again. Almost everybody had come to welcome them back, and there was already a loud chatter coming from the crowd. Leo was the first person to come down the hill, followed shortly by Will Solace. The group of demigods went wild with applause, cheering for their campmates. After a few seconds Frank was seen at the top of the hill. I sprinted from my spot in the crowd and engulfed him in a much needed hug on my part. I looked up as he looked down and our lips met. It was as if the crowd had been put on mute. Nothing else mattered except for Frank. He was here safe and we were finally back together again. I smiled into the kiss as I finally understood how Nico could find the loud music calming. The fact that the loud music was there simply let him focus on what was more important. In this case, the crowd was the loud music, and Frank was much more important than all of the background noise. After a few seconds we pulled apart. I watched as Frank’s face brightened, a huge smile on his face as he looked into my eyes. I returned the smile but couldn’t stop myself from thinking. If this happened after he returned from a quest, I wouldn’t mind if he went on more quests.
