After they were done setting up, Steve climbed up that ladder and paused as he reached the top of the bus, the sunset looked breathtaking.

"Wow," he said memorized by the vibrating hues of yellow and orange

Madison turned her head slightly as he heard his voice, a smile formed on her face

"It's beautiful, isn't it?"

Steve nods his gaze still on the sunset. "Yeah"

Madison felt a smile creep up her face. "Just like home,"

Steve turned to her, curious yet a bit concerned. "You miss California, don't you?"

"Of course, I do," Madison replied

"Why did you move here? "

"You think I had a choice. "Madison let out a sigh. "It was my parent's decision. I didn't want to leave; San Diego was perfect until my stepdad and his son came along"

Steve gave her a sympathetic look

"Divorced?"

Madison took a deep breath, her gaze focused on the sunset.

"My dad lives in a small apartment in LA. I probably will move out of here by the time I graduate." Life here isn't any better,"

" Yeah, tell me about it," Steve said sarcastically

Madison let out a slight chuckle, her expression turned more serious

"I'm not talking about Dart; I'm talking about Billy. He's been angry, I don't care if he lashes out at me, but Max- that's where I cross the line." Her voice started to quiver like she's been carrying this huge weight on her shoulders

"And... sometimes I feel so helpless...like I'm not doing enough to protect her and..."

She stops for a second, realizing she is probably way too much.

" I'm sorry I don't know why I'm telling you this"

He put his hand on her shoulder, the small gesture felt like the right way to tell her that he was there for her, just like she was for him. He wanted to let her know that she wasn't alone.

" Hey- it's ok- it's ok"

Madison felt touched by this sudden gesture- she wasn't expecting it at all, but it felt nice. The two shared a comfortable silence as the sun went down.

A few minutes later...

It is nighttime now, Steve and Madison already climbed down the ladder leaving Lucas on the lookout. He sat down on a chair, flicking the lighter on and off.

"So, you guys fought one of these before?"

Steve nods at Max. She sat down with her arms crossed. "And you're like totally 100% it wasn't a bear or something?"
