Chapter 9: Treason Part 2

Treytan's POV
My biggest fear has come true.

Treason.

Adryan has committed treason.

It is treasonous to claim territory without my consent. He knows that. He must have been blinded by emotion when he made that decision. He's heartbroken. I was at my window watching when the Royal Guard accompanied him back. He didn't look like the son I have raised. There was no life in him. Even the way he walked was weak. I feel bad for taking her away but I don't regret it. She was making him weak and reckless.

"Trey! Do not touch me!" She pushed away a guard. "Trey! Treytan!"

I paid attention to my wife. "Leave us."

The guards left us.

"Why is Adryan locked up in his chambers? I went to see him and I was told I'm not allowed to! Why not? Why can't I see my son?"

"My dear Nova, I'm sorry to be the bearer of bad news but Adryan has committed treason."

"No!" She covered her mouth and backed away swiftly.

"He claimed a territory for himself."

"He wouldn't do that! He knows the law!"

"Long live prince Adryan, they chanted. They fell on their knees for him. That is not the only thing he did. He ordered 100 men to fight against foreigners. I am the Supreme Commander! Adryan does not have that kind of power! He should have gone through me!"

"Maybe it was a last minute decision."

"Stop defending him! He's defiant! They followed him without question! That is dangerous! It's only a matter of time before he ousts me from the throne!"

Nova broke into weeping. Is she weeping for my imminent doom or her treasonous son? She took a moment to compose herself before she looked at me, eyes sore with tears. "And what is his punishment?"

"What is the punishment for treason Nova?"

"No!" She fell to her feet and cried bitterly. "Not my son! No! Not my Adryan."

Adryan is her favorite. It breaks my heart too but I can't save him. He did this to himself.

"Nova."

"Stop it! You are the king! Stop it!"

I helped her up. "If there was one or two witnesses to this, I would pay them off to be silent and I would lock Adryan up. But there was more than one, over 100. They all saw it. They all saw the emerald flag flying where it shouldn't. Adryan is rogue and he needs to be put down."

"He's not a dog! He's your son! You can't just put him down!"

"I warned him many times to get in line but Adryan is out of control. I can't help him."

"He's your son!"

"I said I can't help him."

Nova's POV
"Faye! I need your help!" I'm a mess of nerves. "I need help Faye!"

"What is it mother?"

"Faye, your brother will be executed for treason."

"Relian?"

"No, Adryan! Wait, why would you think it's Relian?"

"Nothing. But if it's Adryan it makes sense."

"Don't talk like that. I need you to distract the guards outside Adryan's room."

"Why?"

"So that I can talk to my son. This may be my last chance."

Tomorrow the Council and will convene. In front of the king, Adryan and his conspirators will be tried and executed. No one is to speak to the traitors.
