On the 22nd of November 2003, shortly after takeoff from Baghdad International Airport (IATA: BGW, ICAO: ORBI), Baghdad, Iraq, an Airbus A300 B2-200F cargo plane, registered as Oscar Oscar- Delta Lima Lima (OO-DLL), which was owned by European Air Transport (it was doing business as DHL Express), was struck on the left wing by a surface to air missile while it was on a scheduled cargo flight to Bahrain International Airport (IATA: BAH, ICAO: OBBI), Muharraq, Bahrain.

Around 8,000 feet of altitude, a 9K34 Strela-3 surface to air missile struck the rear of the left wing between the engine and the wingtip, the warhead of the missile damaged the trailing edge surfaces of the wing structure and it caused a fire, all three hydraulic systems lost pressure and flight controls were disabled, due to the fact that the three hydraulic lines were in the wingtip and now all the hydraulic fluid was leaking out of the wing, the aircraft pitched rapidly up and down in a roller coaster phugoid motion, oscillating between a nose up and nose down position, the Captain could only use thrust to modify the pitch of the plane, the speed and the altitude of the plane and the Captain would vary the throttles asymmetrically to control the yaw and to turn the aircraft back towards the airport, the crew deployed the landing gear early to increase drag to reduce the airspeed and to stabilise the aircraft, after 10 minutes of flying away from the airport, the crew executed a right turn and they initiated a descent to Baghdad International Airport, around 400 feet above the ground turbulence upset the balance and the right wing dipped and the aircraft touched down hard off the centreline of Runway 33L, full reverse thrush was deployed but the plane veered off the paved runway, the plane ran through fought, soft ground, which threw up a plume of sand and the plane was dragging a razor wire barrier, the plane came to a rest after about 3,300 feet.

The flight crew were given many awards for their heroic actions in controlling and landing the stricken plane.

The summary of the incident was a Missile attack which lead to a loss of hydraulics.

Pictured below is the damage the missile did to the wing of the plane.
