The Linate Airport (IATA: LIN, ICAO: LIML) disaster occurred in Italy at the Linate Airport in Milan on the morning of the 8th of October 2001, this occurred when Scandinavian Airlines System Flight 686, registered as Sierra Echo- Delta Mike Alpha (SE-DMA), a McDonnell Douglas MD-87 airliner that was carrying 110 people on board, the flight was bound for Copenhagen Airport (IATA: CPH, ICAO: EKCH), Denmark, when the plane collided on takeoff with a Cessna Citation CJ2, registered as Delta- India Echo Victor Xray (D-IEVX), business jet that was carrying four people and it was bound for Le Bourget Airport (IATA: LBG, ICAO: LFPB), Paris, France, all 114 people on both aircraft were killed in the crash along with four people on the ground (total is 118), the accident remains the deadliest aviation accident to occur in Italian aviation history.
The airport at the time was covered in a thick fog layer, at 08:09:28am local time, the MD-87 was given clearance to takeoff from Runway 36R, fifty three seconds later, the MD-87 was travelling about 280 kilometres per hour. When it collided with the Cessna Citation, the MD-87 lost it's right engine, the plane reached an altitude of approximately 40 feet, the left engine lost some thrust due to debris ingestion and the plane, which also lost it's right main landing gear, came down and crashed into a luggage hanger located near the end of the runway, the plane crashed into the hanger at an approximate speed of 252 kilometres per hour, everyone on board the MD-87 were killed in the crash along with four people on the ground who were in the hanger at the time of the crash and four more people who were also in the hanger at the time of the crash were injured, all four people on board the Cessna Citation were killed in the accident.
The summary of the crash was a Runway collision in poor visibility.
