Lufthansa Flight 540, registered as Delta- Alpha Bravo Yankee Bravo (D-ABYB), was a scheduled commercial international passenger flight serving the Frankfurt Airport (IATA: FRA, ICAO: EDDF), Frankfurt, Germany to O.R. Tambo International Airport (IATA: JNB, ICAO: FAOR), Johannesburg, South Africa route with a scheduled stopover at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (IATA: NBO, ICAO: HKJK), Nairobi, Kenya, on the 20th of November 1974, the Boeing 747-130 that was serving this route and was operating as Flight 540 was carrying 157 people when the plane crashed and caught fire shortly after takeoff from Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in Nairobi for the last leg of the flight, the crash resulted in the deaths of 55 passengers and 4 crew members (59 in total), it was the first fatal accident to involve a Boeing 747.
As the aircraft was taking off from Runway 24 at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, the flight crew felt a buffering vibration and the Captain continued the climb of the plane as it took off, he retracted the landing gear, however, as this was being done, the aircraft started to descend and the stall warning system light came on in the cockpit, the aircraft continued to descend and approximately 3,700 feet (1,100 meters) from the end of the runway, the 747 crashed in the grass, the plane then struck an elevated access road and the plane broke up, the left wing exploded and soon fire spread to the fuselage of the plane which killed 59 people on board the plane.
The summary of the crash was Crashed shortly after takeoff due to pilot error and design flaw.
