The Tenerife Airport Disaster occurred on the 27th of March 1977, when two Boeing 747 passenger jets, which were diverted to the airport after the two plane's destination airport of Grand Canaria Airport (IATA: LPA, ICAO: GCLP) was closed due to a bomb going off in the terminal and the calls of another bomb in the area, collided on the runway in heavy fog at Los Rodeos Airport (which is now Tenerife North Airport, IATA: TFN, ICAO: GCXO), on the Spanish island of Tenerife, the collision occurred when KLM Flight 4805, registered as Papa Hotel- Bravo Uniform Foxtrot (PH-BUF), initiated it's takeoff run while Pan Am Flight 1736, registered as November 736 Papa Alpha (N736PA), was still on the runway, the impact and resulting fire killed everyone on board KLM 4805 and most of the occupants of Pan Am Flight 1736, with only 61 survivors in the front section of the Pan Am aircraft, the collision resulted in 583 fatalities, the disaster is the deadliest accident in aviation history.

The Captain of the Pan Am flight applied full power and turned his massive plane sharply to the left in an attempt to avoid the impending collision with KLM, by the time the KLM pilots saw the Pan Am plane, they were to fast to stop, so they prematurely rotated in an attempt to clear the Pan Am by lifting off, this caused a 22 meter (72 feet) long tail strike, the KLM was within 330 feet of the Pan Am plane and at a speed of approximately 260 kilometres per hour when the KLM left the ground, the nose landing gear cleared the Pan Am plane, but the left side engines, the lower fuselage and the main landing gear struck the upper right side of the Pan Am's fuselage, ripping apart the centre of the jet directly above the wing, the right engines of the KLM crashed through the upper deck directly behind the cockpit, the impact sheared off the outer left engine of KLM (Engine Number one) which caused several amounts of materials to be ingested by the inner left engine of KLM (Engine number 2) which also damaged the KLM's wing, the KLM 747 stalled and rolled sharply, the plane hit the ground 500 feet (150 meters) past the collision location, the plane went sliding down the runway for a further 1,000 feet (300 meters), the full load of fuel on the KLM ignited immediately into a fireball that couldn't be subdued for several hours, all 248 people on board the KLM plane were killed in the collision, 335 people were killed on the Pan Am plane, 61 people survived all of which were on the Pan Am plane (there were 583 total fatalities), this makes it the deadliest crash in commercial aviation history.

The summary of the crash was a Runway Collision in fog.
