Lizzie arrived back home in Critter City just as the sun began to touch the horizon, and she breathed a silent sigh of relief as she passed the moat, knowing she was safe from the dangers of the night.
She walked through the Froggy District; Lady Katherine of House Blossom looking around in amazement as she followed Lizzie.
Lady Katherine had chosen to go with Lizzie since fairies liked animals, and Animalia was a kingdom full of animals. There were also rumors that the leader of Animalia was an animal herself, but those rumors were absolutely false. Lizzie was no cat! She was a normal human with normal human things, like fingers, and legs, and ears! No cat anatomy whatsoever!
Passing through the gates into the main district, Lizzie strode into the now-empty town square, past the fountain, and began up the path to the Town Hall, where she lived in the upper floors.
Entering the hall, she passed the council table, empty since it was nighttime, and went upstairs. Opening a door to an empty room, she told Lady Katherine, "You can use this room. Feel free to decorate if you like." Lady Katherine thanked her with a smile and walked in, closing the door behind her.
Continuing on through the hallway, Lizzie came to to her bedroom. Walking in and closing the door behind her, she began to prepare for bed.
Lizzie's bedroom was decorated in pinks and purples, with a four-poster bed that had a curtain draped around it. A desk sat in the corner, piled high with papers. A window seat gave her a spot to relax, and several massive bookshelves were spread around, filled to the brim with books. A plush carpet covered most of the floor, and doors led to her bathroom and walk-in closet, both decorated and painted on. Detailed art covered the walls, drawings and blueprint of future districts in progress.
In the corner, unnoticed by many, sat several balls of yarn, and what looked like a small scratching post, despite Lizzie not having any pets.
Dressed in her pajamas and having brushed her teeth, Lizzie climbed into her bed with one of her favorite books, The Majors: Who Let The Demon Out, and settled down to read.
~~~
Lizzie opened her eyes.
She was standing in a round room with bloodred walls. Darker patches of reddish-brown were splashed everywhere, and a puddle of something black and evil-looking was pooled in the corner. Chains hung on the wall, although nothing was in them. A door was on the far end on the room, painted black.
Looking down at herself, Lizzie noticed that she was wearing an odd black skinsuit covered in a purple drape, like that of a fortune teller's. A hood was on her head, and a black veil of sorts partially obscured her vision. A necklace with a blue-purple gem was around her neck.
Removing the hood and veil, Lizzie placed it on the ground and went to the door. Trying the handle, she was surprised to find it open. Walking out into the hallway beyond, Lizzie stopped when she heard a noise.
Looking down the hallway, Lizzie saw a person, obscured by shadow. Glowing red eyes glared at her out of the face area. Her heartbeat almost doubling in speed, Lizzie took a step back, then turned and began to run.
Racing through the twisting hallways, Lizzie heard a menacing, sinister laugh echo behind her. Trying to run faster, she tripped and fell, but managed to catch herself on the wall. But then the wall seemed to ripple, and she fell through into darkness.
Lizzie opened her mouth to scream, and the shadows rushed in. Lizzie could feel it going down her throat, touching her heart, and twining around it, as if claiming her heart for itself. More tendrils began to seem in, this time going in her mind.
She tried to thrash and throw off the shadows, but it only made them grip her tighter and push more darkness in, trying to force its way into her mind.
Lizzie could feel it changing her mind, her thoughts, but right before the shadows covered everything, something bright and full of positive energy charged in, attacking the shadows and forcing them to back off.
~~~
Lizzie awoke with a gasp, surging up from the bed and thrashing, trying to get the shadows she knew were there off of her. Someone grabbed her arm, and Lizzie mindlessly swung her fist, barely missing as the person ducked under it.
"Calm down, it's me!" the person cried, and Lizzie recognized the voice as belonging to Lady Katherine. Blinking, she stopped struggling and looked around, taking in her room and Katherine sitting next to her on the bed.
A nightmare. Lizzie realized. It was just a nightmare.
Lady Katherine shifted, and Lizzie focused on her. "Are you ok?" She asked with concern. "I heard screaming, and I came here and found you thrashing on the bed, so I tried to wake you up. You were sleeping really deeply; I had to use a bit of my magic to pull you from your slumber."
Lizzie opened her mouth to tell Lady Katherine about the nightmare, but she closed it as a dark voice urged her to keep it hidden. Opening her mouth again, she said, "I'm ok, it was just a bad dream."
Lady Katherine looked at her worriedly. "Are you sure? You can tell me about it, if you want."
Lizzie wanted to tell Katherine about the nightmare. She wanted to tell her about the person with red eyes, about the shadows that had been in her head, about the darkness lingering in the corner of her mind even now.
But she didn't. Instead, when she opened her mouth, all she said was, "I'm fine. Thanks for waking me up. Could I go back to sleep now?" Lady Katherine nodded and got up, although Lizzie could tell the concerned look on her face was still there.
"I'll leave you to it, then. Goodnight, Lizzie." Katherine said. Lizzie echoed the farewell, and she left the room.
Once she was gone, Lizzie looked around at the room. It was exactly the way it was earlier in the night; no signs of a break-in or anything. The book she was reading was on the floor nearby. It had probably fallen when she had been thrashing in her sleep.
It really was just a dream. I must have fallen asleep.
The dream was probably just from The Majors. There was a demon or two in it, so her subconscious must have taken that and turned it into a nightmare.
But... if it was just a dream, then why couldn't I tell Katherine about it?
Lizzie didn't sleep for the rest of the night.
A/N: So... that happened. I swear this wasn't planned at all, I just sat down and the chapter wrote itself.
The book Lizzie was reading is actually a book here on Wattpad, written by Rainyjoi2009, and it's really amazing! Go check it out, and the rest of his books as well! I can guarantee you will not regret it! :D
