"Hummer's Creek," I mumbled to myself glancing at the sign on the side of the road. "Hello?" I managed to answer my phone.
"Phemie!" Cami shouted on the other end which caused me to swerve a bit. "I miss you, where are you?"
"Cami, I just left this morning," I giggled as I pulled into an off-road diner. "You haven't had time to miss me."
"Oh, yes I have," She corrected. "You'll let us know when you get settled right?"
"Of course, but right now I'm starving, and need to eat." I turned off the engine and looked out the window to the fairly empty parking lot.
"Okay, I'll call later, love you!" She sang loudly as I made my way out of my jeep.
"Good afternoon hun, have a seat anywhere you'd like." The waitress sniffed the air as she continued wiping down the counter. "Here's the menu, what can I get you to drink?" She walked over, her reddish-orange tight curls were tucked away by bobby pins hidden under a very wide turquoise headband. She was quite thin and frail, her blue eyeshadow seemed to go all the way to her eyebrows and her ruby red lipstick had been overdrawn on her overly thin lips. Her voice was deep and raspy like she inhaled cigarettes like oxygen, her painted nails were now chipped, and she had dark circles under her eyes.
"Water is fine thank you," I looked over the menu and then back up at a few customers around the diner.
"Here's your water," She coughed as she took out her notepad and pen from behind her ear. "What can I get you?"
"Cheeseburger with fries," I replied handing her back the menu before grabbing my phone out to text Evelyn.
"Here's your burger," She places the plate in front of me. "You're not from around here are you?" She asked as she raised her pencil-thin eyebrow.
"No ma'am just passing through," I manage to choke out popping a fry into my mouth.
"Passing through huh?" Her light brown eyes bore holes through me. "Where are you from?"
"The Moon Light Pack," I take a bite of the burger before looking back at her.
"You know the further you go west the further you get from the wolf packs?" She shifted her weight from one foot to the other before crossing her arms.
"Yes ma'am I remember, I won't travel too far," I told her as I took a sip of water. "Thank you,"
As I finish eating the bell dings to the entrance and three burley, rough, brutes come through the door. "Sally, Bucky, and I will take burgers and Joey wants hotdogs." One of them relayed to the waitress that took my order earlier, they fell short as they walked past me.
"Well, what do we have here?" The blonde guy asked as he took a big whiff of air. "Long way from home sugar?"
"I think she might want a tour, Bradley" The long-haired one elbowed the guy talking. A name to put to that face, Bradley must be the blonde one, I must admit he doesn't look very bright, but he does look intimidating.
"Oh, I'll give her a tour," He stopped in front of me as I laid my money out on the table. "You want a tour, Sugar?"
"No, thank you, I'm not staying." I excuse myself from the table as I put my purse over my shoulders.
"Oh, I think you can stay, maybe for a drink and that tour." The last guy stood blocking my way from leaving.
"Joey, you leave that girl alone," Sally fussed as she came out from the swinging back door. "You go on now, girl get to where you're going."
I nodded my head and jumped in my jeep heading down the otherwise empty highway, I heard the honking of horns. "What?" I questioned as I looked into my rearview mirror to see flashing lights and people standing up and a big maroon truck getting closer to me.
"How about that tour now?" Bradley the blonde brute shouted from the back of the truck. "Drive straight Joey, damn it!" He banged the top of the truck with his fist.
"Oh, my goddess," I mumbled to myself as I pressed the gas pedal. "No!" I shouted as my jeep sped up.
"Oh, don't do that to us, Darlin'!" Bucky yelled out standing beside Bradley in the back end of the beat-up truck. We were both headed in the same direction on the same road running two different ways. Their shirts which had the sleeves torn off were wiping in the wind, and I didn't know how fast my jeep would go considering I had a trailer attached to the back.
"Heads up Joey!" Bradley shouted as we got closer to a sign I couldn't quite make out, I was going too fast to read it. "Hey, Sugar don't go that way!" He cupped his hands around his mouth as their truck slowed down.
"What?!" I said out loud as I looked back in my rearview mirror before slowing down. "I wonder why he said that? I know this is still werewolf territory." I spoke to myself as I put my hand on my chest trying to calm down. "Probably trying to scare me to stay there, Jerks!" I pulled into the first hotel I came across, Lakes Inn, good because I definitely needed to recover, I'm exhausted.
"Good evening, welcome to Lakes Inn, room for one?" A petite young girl asked as she grabbed a pen. "Name?"
"Euphemia Winters, yes just one room," I replied to the sweet-looking ginger-haired girl behind the tall counter. "Could you tell me where I am? I couldn't make out the sign on my way in."
"Sure, Serendipity is the name of the town and the city is about twenty miles in it's called Perpetuity. We're under The Bridge Water Pack in case you were wondering, here's your key. Room 402." She smiled showing a gap in between her two front teeth.
"Thank you," I told her as I took the keys and headed to my room which unfortunately was on the second floor.
