"Hey Phemie, still no word from Karter?" Evelyn asked as she and Jesse walked up to my locker.

"No, and I don't understand it's been five days since he asked me out, it's been five days since I spoke to him, it's been five days since he showed up to school," I stated as I looked down at the phone in my hand hoping it would ring with his name across the screen. "Have you seen him or his truck at his parents' house?" I questioned Jesse, with a hint of desperation in my eyes.

"No, Phemie, they haven't and Jesse would let you know otherwise if he sees him in class or at home." Cami forced a smile as she took my phone and put it in her back pocket before dragging me to class.

"Ladies the bell rings in 3...2...1..." Mr. Cuttingham spoke out as he took off his brown fedora before setting it on his desk. "Tomorrow is prom, and I wanted to remind all of you to vote for homecoming royalty." He smiled in my direction before starting his lesson.

The loudspeaker crackled as we exited class and the Principal, Mr. Rhoads spoke from overhead, "Good morning students of Graves High School, I have a few announcements. Tomorrow is prom, let's not forget to get all the votes for this year's homecoming royalty, again those nominees are Karter Jenkins, Scott Cooper, and Ryan Price for homecoming king. Nina Martinez, Jayla Stewert, and Euphemia Winters for homecoming queen." He paused taking in a deep breath. "School is a week from ending, please remember to grab your yearbooks, clean out your lockers, and thank your teachers, that is all."

"Yes, let's not forget you are a nominee for homecoming queen, Phemie." Camilla grabbed my shoulder and pulled me in for a hug as we headed to our next class.

"What if he doesn't show?" I asked as we headed into Mrs. Brooke's classroom. "What if I show up alone? No, if I don't hear from him I'm not going." I stated, putting my foot down, metaphorically, as we took our seats.

"Don't be ridiculous!" She slammed, "You will come with all of us to prom, even if he doesn't call. You will be disqualified from being homecoming queen, plus you will enjoy our company as we party." As the lunch bell rang out I dreaded going into the cafeteria, as I looked around I saw no sign of Karter, and no one had seen him in days.

"Hey, Phemie!" Evelyn waved as she grabbed her plate of food and marched to our table with Jesse in tow.

"Hello," I said plainly as my plate brushed up against hers, I didn't look myself, that was evident, my brightly colored clothes were now dark, and my hair hadn't been washed in a few days.

"Euphemie, what did I say?" Cami barked out as she sat down next to me. "Say it!"

"I will not let a man dictate my life, I will not become a hermit because I do not hear from him. I will get dressed and go to prom with my friends, even if I do not have a date, and have a good time." I repeated the words in a monotone voice as I stuffed a tater tot in my mouth.

"Has anybody seen Jayla Stewert?" Evelyn questioned as she took a huge bite of her sloppy joe. Jesse was there as always to wipe her chin, over the past few days they started coordinating their clothes, today she was wearing a beautiful red dress and he had on a red collared shirt, like yesterday when they both dressed in yellow.

"What do you mean?" Cami asked as she cut her food up, eyeing Evelyn and raising her eyebrow.

"She hasn't been to school in five days, right babe?" She looked over at Jesse who nodded his head. "Yeah, I haven't seen her in the one class we have, ugh, calculus."

"Five days? You don't think..." I began as I dropped my food on my plate, causing some to splatter on my blouse.

"No, I don't!" Cami interrupted me as she grabbed her napkin and wiped my shirt down. As we walked out of the cafeteria I didn't notice the sad faces stuck to mine. I couldn't concentrate on schoolwork, all I could do was think about Karter. Where was he? Was he avoiding me? Am I going to prom alone? Did something happen to him? The last bell of the day rang out and I trekked my way to the parking lot, I looked about in hopes I would see a glimpse of him or his truck.

"Evelyn. Jesse." I spoke up as I went to my hunter-green jeep, watching Camilla sit inside.

"No, no luck, sorry." Jesse shook his head waiting on Evelyn to put her books in his truck. I waved them off before taking another look around the school's parking lot for Karter or his truck.

"Don't worry, he isn't worth your tears, or worry. You never know, he might show up at prom tomorrow, but even if he doesn't you will have a wonderful time because you'll be with friends that love and care about you." She hugged me as I slumped into my seat. "Now, let's have a great weekend before we will be going get our hair and nails done tomorrow with Evelyn, covered by Max. So, tonight comedy, drama, horror, or your favorite period pieces?" She grilled as she held onto the bar as we took a sharp turn getting to my apartment.

"You already know me." I giggled as I parked my jeep and started to head to my door, only to be surprised at who was standing by my apartment.

"Euphemia, my sweet," David began as he held out his hand for me to take.

"David, what the hell are you doing here?" Camilla snapped as she pulled out her phone, calling her mother I'm guessing.

"I heard that you no longer have a date to prom, that Karter Jenkins doesn't know how special you are. So, I'd like to take you myself, to treat you like the queen you are." He got down on his knee as he held forth a bouquet of daisies.
