ERIATA ADESUWA AMELIA
The demons fought, fighting to be released but I surpressed it all as I struggled to put on a straight face. I stood at my usual spot on the assembly ground, each minute was like a ticking bomb pushing me closer to my doom.
Today is Friday. Today is the day I know if I made the cut. Today is the day my fate is determined, as the principal continued talking and sharing his advice, none of which I appreciated. The tension around us got thicker, both the shadowing prefects and the forthcoming ambassadors.
Even those like me who must have tired so hard to hide their emotions must have broken character once or twice. This day was very important for us, we knew it, the whole school knew it.
"So now it's time for what we all have been waiting for" the principal said and I immediately straightened my back "why is everyone looking so tense, loosen up"
He laughed. No one did
He cleared his throat and continued "okay, so as you all know this is third term and next term you all would be moving to a new class, to a higher phase of your life"
Cut with the bullshit and get straight to the point
"Our ss2 students would also move to ss3 and become the new seniors of the whole school, this will also come with great responsibility. Which is why prefects are selected and ambassadors chosen. Every year before the final event we have a pre event, what is the word you people call it?"
"The cut!" Some people yelled and he nodded
"Yes that. On a norms it is always done after the mid term break, privately but this time there are a few changes. Not further wasting more time, I would like to start with the prefects. Head boy bring the list"
David handed him a white but not before sharing eye contact with Sophia
Weird
"Academic prefect boy, Ujunwa Collins and Gbenga Halifax . Academic prefect girl........"
I toned him out. I stared at the principal, he's lips were moving but I couldn't hear what he was saying, everything started slowing down and my vision began to get blurry. My heart began to pound.
No this can't be happening, not here, not now
My eyes searched around trying to focus on something, anything that could distract me and calm me down.
I stared at Omobola, she looked tense, I quickly looked away. I searched everyone's faces, they either looked excited, anxious, uninterested or tensed. I began to sweat and my heart beat rapidly increased.
For fucks sake, calm down Adesuwa
My subconsciousness screamed at me but it already felt like I was losing control of my body. My eyes suddenly drifted to a certain pair of eyes that felt like it had been staring at me for a while now.
Desmond
I hated this boy, with my life. He raised his eyebrow at me and I rolled my eyes and hissed.... lowly. I looked at him again, he was smiling but this time he wasn't looking at me, he was looking at Ola. His eyes had a mischievous glint in them. I wonder what was up with those two.
I faced the principal and smiled, all traces of my panic attack gone. I wonder how
Shut up! You know how. You owe him
"Social prefect boy, Raymond Godson and Ayodeji Jaiyeola....."
I turned my head to look at Ola, he and Desmond shared that same look again before he went to stand with the rest of the people whose name had been called out. His eyes met with mine and he smiled, I returned the smile.
"Social prefect girl, Eduvie Arieth and Dahiru Aisha"
Well someone looked excited. Arieth squealed then jumped and hugged Itohan. Nice
"And finally, health prefect"
I glanced at Bola, she straightened her back
So she did care
"Health prefect boy Ugochukwu Promise and Ifezulike Chinelo. Health prefect girl Adesunya Bukola and......"
I glanced at her again, she looked like someone that was drenched with cold water. She was legit shaking
Wow. That was so unlike her, I crossed my fingers and said a silent prayer for her.
"Adesina...
She was already grinning widely. People were already hugging her. I smiled
"...... Opeyemi"
It was as if the hall became cold. The supposed girl walked up and stood with the others smiling. I gave her the eyeing of her lifetime and hissed loudly and many heads turned towards me including Desmond.
I glanced at Bola, she was staring at her feet like they were the most interesting thing in the world, her shoulders slumped and I sighed. I wanted to go and meet her but I couldn't. Forthcoming ambassadors were separated from prefects but that didn't stopped me from trying to show her sympathy through my eyes but she didn't look up, not even once.
I saw her clean her face and I knew she was crying, suprisingly ever since I had knew Bola since JSS2 this was my first time seeing her crying. She wasn't one to get emotional.
She looked up and our eyes met for the briefest moment and she smiled as if wishing me goodluck or maybe she was telling me that she was okay.
She stood straight and and focused on the principal, another tear dropped and more began dropping and she literally ran out of the assembly ground. She could get punished but what was there for her to loose besides she already lost her post.
"Now on to the most important one. Our ambassadors. As you all know the ambassadors are divided into three, academic, social and welfare with four people in each category. We won't tell you which category you are now but we will call out the names of the 16 people who made the cut"
My heart beat increased.
"Jones Rhoda, Salami Vivian......."
And the names kept coming and the clapping got louder, all of them happily matching towards where the principal was and shaking hands with him.
"Balogun Sophia, Jamuike Desmond....."
Sophia had the brightest smile on as she walked towards the principal, she and David shared a glance..... again. Ten names had already been called and I hadn't yet heard my name. Panic began to rise again and my heart beat got faster.
"And finally Eriata Adesuwa"
At that moment I felt achieved, a smile appeared on my face, a real one now. I walked towards the principal, making sure to make my steps slow and graceful. I reduced my smile so it would look like I was calm..... I wasn't.
When I stood with the rest of them Sophia and Ola hugged me and the smile I was trying to hide exploded and I grinned so much that my cheeks hurt.
"These are the responsible ones, the best among many, they have made me and the whole school in general proud. They have all worked hard to get to where they are now. As for those of you that weren't picked, don't be discouraged another opportunity will come your way" he said then faced us "don't forget that this is not where it all ends. This is just the cut, this isn't even the main deal. If you like relent, you will face the consequence. Incase you didn't notice, the head boy and head girl posts were not announced. Their own is a special case. Goodluck students"
"Marching song" a shadowing assembly prefect said
