"Lizabeta stop hiding behind my skirt at once!"
It was her mothers first official day as hand maiden to the Queen. A role she did not take lightly. It would be Lili's first time meeting the prince, they were the same age, and the Queen was so fond of her mother she insisted their children must meet. Despite it not being quite so proper.
"I'm named after a Saint too!" the boy extends his hand, he was only six, but raised in a very different way than most boy.
Finally standing out from her mothers skirt she stares at the hand in front of her. It felt odd to her that she should shake it.
"Speak Liza, the Lantsov line is favored by our Saints." her mother mutters as she pushes her toward the boy.
Shaking his hand even though it felt odd, she bows her head. "Do you know any card tricks?" it was her latest fascination, even going as far to making her own deck of cards.
Nikolai shakes his head. "No! But I can put my arms over my head and spin really fast and not puke."
Lili just frowns, not very interested in this prince if he couldn't at least do a card trick. They left that meeting indifferent, Lili knew the royals were to be a big part of her life now that her mother was working right beside his mother every day. But she wasn't all that captured my the youngest Prince.
That is until two days later they meet again, Lili's mother has to shove her toward him again. Lili bows, dreading the fact she has to spend time with him again when she could be doing something else.
"Lizabeta, come sit, I have something to show you." he rushes her over to a table in the room.
Slowly making her way over, with a nod of permission from her mother she follows him. Sitting opposite him, Nikolai shows her a deck of cards, grinning she waits for him to do something. As if it were magic she watches him make a card disappear.
When Nikolai showed Lili he could in fact make it look as though the card vanished into thin air is when he won her over forever. The two became two sides of the same coin from then on, even when it became suggested they not, Lili discovering she was Grisha the year later and becoming resound in her classes. In fact, the more they learned and were told to stay away from each other, to leave the other in childhood, the more they stuck together.

Lili can't really comprehend where to start. They're sitting in Sturmhond's cabin, Nikolai now facing her, leaning his elbows on his knee's waiting for her to start. Waiting to hear how his best friend is sitting in front of him.
"When I got sent to base camp, they realized I was very good at fixing things as well as fighting. Metals and guns, that sort. Even better at making grenades and things that went crash, bang, boom. I learned how to control where the bullets were directed in a fight, they liked that.I went off on a supply run to Kerch one day. You know how much I loved the sea so I jumped at the chance I got. It was only for a night, but I tried learning the best I could... So I fought for it. I wanted to be on the sea, see the war away from shore and realized how useful it could be out here." Nikolai can relate, he had a very similar experience when he spent his time in the military.
