Chapter 14 - 1, 2, 3... rock, paper... knife

﹏﹏﹏

Mia - Friday, 7:42 AM

The sound of my phone ringing wakes me from a restless sleep. Dozens of notifications appear on the lock screen. It takes me several minutes to successfully unlock it, probably because of the dark circles under my eyes.

When finally, by some miracle, it decides to open, my breath catches. Cara Ward's name is everywhere on social media. I open a link sent by Ethan and come across an interview conducted last night at 10 PM by Mr. Nick and Mr. Ward, finally announcing the start of the investigation into the disappearance.

I curse myself for falling asleep so quickly and immediately respond to him,

Mia - You still have no news. It's crazy that it took so long!

I sit up on my pillows and await his response, which doesn't take long.

Ethan - No, nothing. What's the plan?

I raise an eyebrow, already having an idea in mind.

Mia - Probably something illegal.

Ethan -That works for me. And for Austin.

I receive a photo that makes me smile despite myself. Austin is lying on a mattress in Ethan's room. Shirtless with tangled hair. He's sleeping with his mouth open, which is funny and cute. Ethan, taking the photo in selfie mode, smiles with all his teeth.

I stare at the photo a little too long, and when I realize it, I toss my phone to the end of the bed, and my head falls heavily on the pillow.

The TV is on when I go downstairs to have breakfast. Both my parents are hanging on to the journalist's every word. I clear my throat, and my mother embraces me when she sees me.

"My dear... I'm sorry I didn't believe you. They'll find her, right, sweetie? Don't worry." My vision blurs, and I tighten my mother's embrace.

"Do you want us to stay with you this weekend?" my father asks.

My parents had planned a trip off the island for their wedding anniversary, and I completely forgot that the departure was tonight.

"No, absolutely not. You've planned this trip for months. Don't worry. There's nothing more I can do anyway."

My father sighs and looks me straight in the eyes.

"No going out after 9 PM and no unnecessary risks. I don't want to be bothered by the police chief because you're conducting the investigation. Work, sleep, rest, understood?"
