After adjourning my coffee meet up with Shoko, I start walking back to my apartment. I like to walk home now and again instead of get the subway because I do my cardio for the day this way rather than having to go to the gym later. I'm walking down the familiar, sakura laden paths and can't help but think of the large tree in Jujutsu tech.
Just as my brain begins to cloud with untimely memories, I feel a car pull up next to me. I keep walking, surreptitiously eyeing the vehicle next to me from under the cover of my sunglasses. It's a new Porsche 911 in a deep navy and now the idea of being kidnapped is not so undesirable. The driver winds their window down, meaning I'm once again met with the blindfolded eyes. Can he even drive like that? He must get pulled over all the time.
I keep walking and pretend to not have noticed the car whilst it rolls along beside me, but my tactic of ignorance doesn't work as I hear Satoru call "y/n" from inside. I stop and place my sunglasses up on my head before turning to face him. He grins at me from inside the vehicle and I raise an eyebrow at him as I move closer to the car, crossing my arms over and leaning on the door as the window is conveniently down. From here I get a closer look at both the car and Satoru.
It's got tan leather seats which are spotless and in the cup holder I see a half drunk iced chai latte. Even with only my head and shoulders through the window of his car, I can feel that the inside is incredibly warm and his heaters are almost certainly on full. My eyes switch over to Satoru and he's wearing a white dress shirt whilst looking at me with (what I can only assume is) an impatient expression. He obviously needs so be somewhere.
"Are you trying to kidnap me?" I ask him, removing my body from the window of his car and placing one hand onto the roof to support myself instead in case he decides to suddenly drive off, which knowing Satoru would be his idea of a 'funny prank'.
"Only if you'll let me." He replies. Did he really drive out all this way to see me?
"What is it you want?"
"Get in the car, there's something I need to tell you" He says as he reaches across from the drivers side to open the door in front of me. I raise an eyebrow at him. "Just get in" he says again, clearly getting annoyed. In response I remove my hand from the top of his car and take a step back with no intention of getting in considering he hasn't told me his motives yet. His expression weakens slightly as he sees my smile fade. "Please, it's important" he says with a softer tone of voice.
I mean who wouldn't get in the car after being spoken to like that. I step forwards and his lips curve up into a smile which makes me even more wary. I extend the already open door (thanks to Satoru's long arms) and slide in before closing it. I was right about the heaters as my seat is practically boiling.
I point to the remnants of his iced chai latte (it's always been both of our favourites). "You can have the rest of it" he says, reading my mind and I thank him in response as he watches me take a sip from the drink which helps to cool me down.
"What's so important that you had to abduct me mid-walk home?" I question him between sips.
"It's about the reception you so very kindly invited yourself to." He replies and I scoff considering Shoko practically said I would have been invited anyway.
"My invitation got lost in the post I'm sure, and it's a soirée." I reply which gains a laugh from him. He has one of those rare laughs with a quality of eternal reassurance in it.
"Well, it's not exactly a soirée. In actual fact, it's more of a protection job." He replies, which peaks my attention.
"Protection huh? Protecting who?"
"Protecting Jujutsu Tech's reputation. Shoko was right when she said it was a show of money and power, it is, but every year there's always some stupid threat made which puts everyone at the event in jeopardy although it's never acted upon. We send the strongest to make sure that Jujutsu Tech doesn't seem weak and can act if anything bad happens. I've gone every year alone so far..."
I look over to him. It felt as if he wanted to say something more, like there was an end to his sentence that was lingering, unable to rise out of his mouth and into the air. Satoru talks all the time about being strong, shows of strength, but what makes him the strongest isn't his technique, it isn't his infinity, it's his ability to go it all alone. He's always alone and any moment of respite, any bonds, any relationships he might make are severed by what. By fate? No, this is something far crueler.
"My point is..." he starts up again "There can be no weaknesses. Of course, the attendees there will know your strength and the L/n clan, but you haven't been there as part of Jujutsu Tech before, with me."
"Got it. No weaknesses. Is there anything more or did you just want to scare me?" I say, tilting my head back to savour the final drops of his iced chai latte before we reach my apartment building which we've been driving towards the entire time.
"I don't mean to scare you. But I'm saying that if there's any reason that you don't think you can do this then you're going to be putting people in danger and you should not go." He replies, his voice turning cold. I look over to him and see his grip on his steering wheel tighten as he breaks outside my building. I look up out of the rolled down window at the skyscraper and then back at him.
"Satoru, the only reason that I wouldn't be fit to attend this event is if I don't have anything to wear. Which is currently the case. Seriously though, you can count on me, there's no way I'm letting you go to this alone after I've heard what it's really about... and you're the strongest, how could I put you in danger?"
"I wasn't suggesting I would be in danger, I'm talking about you." He replies and there's regret in his voice. What seems to be regret for even suggesting the event to Shoko in the first place within earshot of me. There's nothing more I want to reach over and touch him, give him some kind of reassurance that he no longer has to be the strongest alone. But I can't help him face the past, of course, he was once the strongest with someone else.
"Thank you for the drink." I say picking up my bag and opening the car door. "You're an efficient taxi, can I have your card so I can use you again?"
"Ha, ha, very funny." he mock laughs at me as a turn to walk away.
"Y/n?" he calls me back and I pivot on my heel, instantly turning back to him. "The dress code is formal. Wear something... blue." he says as a grin spreads across his face to which I roll my eyes.
"Whatever Satoru..." I say as I reach for my phone from my bag. I hear the engine of his car purr loudly as he moves off and I look up to watch him drive away into the busy city distance underneath the red hues of the setting sun.
Once back into my apartment, I phone Shoko straight away about what to wear. I'm not going to tell her what Satoru told me about the true nature of the event as I don't want to worry her. Funnily enough, the dress she insists on is blue (to my dismay and Satoru's future smugness) but I agree that it is beautiful and perfect for the formal event also.
I end our call and make myself pasta for dinner before watching Netflix in bed. I lay awake thinking about the car ride. There's something wrong with him. It's as if his burdens are so heavy that to share them with someone has now become too great of a task. Instead he must endure and endure, alone until the final straw. He has his flaws, but no one should have to have faced what he has faced and I fear that if this continues, the strongest may break.
