I'm currently waiting in the lobby of my apartment building for Satoru to arrive and take us both to the event. I look down at my blue dress and smooth out the crinkles caused by the way I'm sitting before leaning back into the sofa. The sun is setting outside and I glance at my watch, 6:00 pm. He needs to be here soon otherwise we'll arrive late... and I'm never late.
I check my phone once again for a message to say he's here, but nothing arrives. 15 minutes pass and finally I feel someone tap my shoulder. "Finally, I thought you would never arrive!" I say getting up from my seat expecting to be met with blue eyes, but instead it's just the doorman from the lobby. "Oh, sorry. I thought you we're someone else." I apologise.
"Sorry Miss, but the man in the blue car outside asked me to tell you that he's here as a matter of urgency." The man says with an apologetic smile on his face.
"Ah, okay thank you." I reply, picking up my clutch from the table and getting ready to go. He couldn't even come inside and tell me he's here himself?
I pace across the lobby and over to the revolving door. I push my way through it and I'm met with the cold night air. I see Satoru's Porsche parked a few steps up the road as he leans against it on his phone, he couldn't even send me a text? I observe him for a few moments as his brow furrows and he leans his head back, pushing his hair away from his forehead. He's wearing those obnoxious sunglasses paired with a black suit and tie and a white shirt. He looks stressed.
I watch him for a few more seconds as he stares off down the street into the distance, my gaze following his to see what he's looking at. The sky has turned a beautiful pink and purple haze as the sun begins to sink below the Tokyo skyline. The very bottom of my dress flutters in the breeze and my hair is pushed slightly out of my face as I attempt to control it with my hand.
I look back towards Satoru and he's now looking at me, but his expression isn't stressed like before. In fact I can't decipher his expression at all. It looks as if the weight of a thousand convoluted emotions are pulling on his smile at once in all different directions and he himself isn't even sure how to feel. It's one of those expressions that can be interpreted in any way. To the insecure, he could be judging them. But to those who know him, it's an unjustifiable look of regret, concern, and content all at once.
I stop trying to analyse his emotions and walk towards him as he pushes himself off from against the car. I reach him, standing at his feet and he makes the slight motion of his hand as if he were going to reach towards me or my face. Before he does so my gaze flips to his hand, causing him to move it back subtly to his side as if nothing happened.
"Are you ready to go?" I ask him, conscious of time.
He ignores my statement. "You wore blue." He says as his eyes seem to inspect every single stitch, every detail of the dress I'm wearing and like he's the one trying to examine me now.
"Shoko's choice." I reply, but whether he believes this or not is up to me. He opens the car door behind him for me and I slip into the vehicle before he closes it and moves round to the other side. Once were both ready he moves off from the curb and begins the drive to our destination. It's relatively central so we don't have too far to go and I don't mind the drive anyway considering we're going towards the beautiful sunset.
"The sky is so pretty tonight." I comment nonchalantly and Satoru lets out a 'Hmm' in response. I look over to him. God I hate those stupid sunglasses. I reach over to his face pretending to snatch them away and expecting his infinity to be on... but it's not. Instead I successfully take the sunglasses away and shove them into the glove compartment to my right.
"What was that for?" He asks me calmly.
"I didn't like your sunglasses." I reply honestly and he laughs whilst shaking his head at me.
