Chapter 53
Due to the unusually cold winter this year, Yun Xiaolu's favorite thing to do every day after school was to sit on the heated kang at home and snack.
The golden persimmons were already ripe. She would peel a small section and suck on it, enjoying the sweet and fragrant juice that filled her mouth, completely erasing the astringent taste. Yun Xiaolu really liked eating these dried persimmons.
Looking at the strings of peeled persimmons hanging under the eaves, covered in white frost, Yun Xiaolu knew that when these persimmons were completely dried and turned into persimmon cakes, her winter vacation would probably arrive.
Yun Haisheng had already returned home from the county town. After preparing a warm kang for his eldest daughter, he built a shed to store firewood before finally feeling at ease to go home.
With the cold weather now, Yun Haisheng spent his days chopping firewood and weaving mats at home. The mat in his eldest daughter's house was second-hand, so he thought of making a new one during this period and giving it to her.
After another heavy snowfall, Yun Yi and Zhao Yueji were glad once again for their previous decision. They couldn't endure this winter with just the stove alone.
Yun Yi and Zhao Yueji had already moved into the side room to live, while Wang Yuemin still lived in the main house. But at night, even he used glass bottles filled with hot water to keep warm. The recent cold weather was truly astonishing.
When Yun Xiaolu returned home from school at noon, she drank a bowl of sweet potato porridge and curled up on the kang to keep warm. She had to be frugal with her heating charms, so she always took them off when she came home.
The colder it got, the more people craved for something delicious to eat. Yun Xiaolu leaned against her second sister and began her act.
"Sis, how about we have dumplings today?" Since Zhao Yueji wasn't around, it was easier to persuade Yun Shuang, who was in charge of the kitchen.
Yun Xiaolu blinked her eyes and acted cute. Yun Shuang found it hard to refuse, but most of the grains in the house had been taken to their eldest sister's place in the city, and they had to save some for the Lunar New Year.
"We don't have much grain left at home." Yun Shuang ultimately didn't waver anymore. She had to be a principled sister.
Of course, Yun Xiaolu knew that they didn't have much grain left, but this could be exchanged, couldn't it?
"We won't use much of the fine grains for the mixed grain dumplings." She had already calculated it. Sweet potato flour mixed with cornmeal and a little bit of white flour would be enough to make the dough.
"But I have to go to Li's brigade in the afternoon to get medicine. I don't have much time." Yun Shuang was slightly swayed by the suggestion, but she truly didn't have time to make dumplings.
Yun Xiaolu, of course, knew this. She just needed approval. She could handle the work herself. "I'll knead the dough at home, and I can also chop the cabbage. When you come back, we can start wrapping the dumplings directly."
In order to satisfy her craving, Yun Xiaolu felt that she could learn anything.
"Are you capable?" Yun Yi had never seen her little sister in action, let alone chopping the filling.
"I can handle it slowly. I have watched both you and Mom do it many times at home." It didn't require much skill. Yun Xiaolu had observed the process for so many years that she knew it by heart.
"Alright then, I'll go quickly and come back quickly. If you find it difficult to do, just wait for me to return and I'll take care of it. We can always have our meal a bit later." Yun Shuang was ultimately an indulgent sister. It was just a request for mixed grain vegetarian dumplings from her little sister. Considering the money her sister had earned for the family, it wasn't unreasonable at all.
