It had been two days since I had been summoned to the Caulley corporation offices in San Francisco. As soon as I got the call to meet the offices, I googled the company to see why they wanted to see me. There I saw a picture of Percival Caulley and his son Nathaniel Caulley on the front, however that still didn't answer my question of why they wanted to talk to me. After a quick google search there I stumbled on the photo of Percival Caulley and his family, to the left stood my new wife, Arabella Caulley. This caused me too google the family, specifically Arabella more as on the marriage certificate she was Arabella Tenby. Articles upon articles came up on my phone as I sat in my Las Vegas hotel room. I clicked on one to find out more about my mysterious wife.
Sports News
Arabella Caulley, 18, daughter of Percival Caulley, CEO of Caulley Corporation crashes out of the final stage of the Giro d'Italia after been tipped to win the young rider classification. Reports confirmed an injury to Arabella's wrist meaning she is unable to continue to complete. It was rumoured that should Arabella win the young classification, she would of been picked for the GB Olympic cycling team. We have contacted respresantives for Arabella and await further comment.
Hours had passed and I had learnt that Arabella was now 21, had been studying at UC Berkley in California after her crash. She had not cycled since that race. There was no further mention of her and her father, who supported her at every race from what I could see. It was almost like she had disappeared until I found her.
The day had come for me to arrive at her fathers offices in San Francisco, they had paid for my travel to the offices. I took a deep breath before entering the skyscraper towering above me. A young receptionist was kind enough to point me in the direction of the 35th floor I needed to head up to her. My palms were sweaty, I took the advantage to wipe them on my jeans before the lift doors opened.
"Mr Norris, we have been expecting you. Right this way" A dark haired gentleman, smiled to me as I left the lift and began to walk in front of me. He took me in to an all glass meeting room, pulling a chair out for me to sit at the huge board room table.
"Can I get you anything to drink?" He looked at me, as I took a large gulp.
"Glass of water would be great thank you"
"I will get that now for you. Mr Caulley will be with you in the next five minutes, please make yourself comfortable. I will be back shortly with your drink" I watched as he left, I looked to the front of me and I could see downtown San Francisco, it was actually quite nice to see. A noise from outside caused me to turn, I could see an oldish man in a pink shirt and dark coloured jeans, his hair slicked back walking towards the room. Behind him stood a younger looking man, I recognised them both as Percival and Nathaniel. A glint of blonde hair followed behind them, but I couldn't really see. The door swung open and I immediately felt intimidated by this man's presence, a shock ran in my body causing me to stand up as they entered. I watched as both Nathaniel and Percival walked in, with the door almost slamming in to her, Arabella's face, it was like she was invisible to them. She continued to walk in to the room with her eyes looking down to the floor. She took a seat at the side of her father and brother who now sat opposite me, I sat down and looked towards them, my palms getting sweatier as time progressed.
"Thank you for joining us today Mr Norris. I'm Percival Caulley, this is my son Nathaniel"
"Nice to meet you both" I looked to them, my eyes went to the side of Nathaniel, Arabella continued to look down at the table.
"I'm just going to get right down to it. I am aware of the idiotic behaviour of my daughter and your shotgun marriage. You have no idea how bad this is for my business should this get out that it was just a stupid idiotic action of my child. That's where you come in"
I looked on confused, shocked that he spoke about his daughter as if she wasn't even in the room.
"Me?" It came out a whisper, I coughed a little my throat now drier than the Sahara desert, where was my drink of water when I needed it.
"Yes, you. I have a big deal going through at the moment that cannot be tainted by bad publicity of my family. That's why I must ask you to continue to be married to each other for 6 months until this deal is finalised. You can then say that it didn't work due to work commitments and go your separate ways."
"What?" We all turn to the blonde haired girl who's bright blue eyes are now staring in to mine.
"Not now Arabella. You've done enough." I watched as he snapped her causing her to go quiet. " I will be sure to invest in to McLaren as a sponsor if you can keep up this deal"
As much as I wanted to say something I just couldn't, I was still trying to process what had just been said. I look to Arabella, who looked in to my eyes, I could see how she was biting on her bottom lip to stop herself from crying, her eyes were now glazed over.
"I'll do it. Not because of the sponsorship but because the bad publicity wouldn't be good for McLaren." It was true I wasn't doing it for the sponsorship, I said yes as part of me knew how bad she was going to be treated if I said no and as much I didn't know her, I didn't want to see her go through that.
"Perfect. I understand you live in Monaco" I nod my head. "Arabella will move in to your apartment in Monaco. To the outside world you will be a loving couple, what you do behind closed doors on you. When it get close to the deal been finalised you can distance yourself with the statement of divorce coming out once the deal had been finalised. As you can understand this is a tricky situation for us all, so no one must know about this deal, you will simply be a married couple, who have been dating for a while privately with a decision to marry in Vegas as a last minute gesture of love. Do you both understand?"
"Yes" We both say together.
"Arabella will be moving to Monaco in the next week. I will let you both finalise the details for that. I must head out now as I have another meeting. Goodbye" Percival leaves, followed by a smirking Nathaniel. Arabella stay sat at her seat, she looked at me before wiping a tear from her face before getting up and not muttering another word to me.
What the hell had I just agreed to?
