Race day! I always got a little nervous before a race but even more so this time as it was Belle's first time attending one of my races. I was put a lot of pressure on myself, more than other drivers. I always wanted to do well and never let my fans or family and friends down. I'd kissed Belle goodbye and I now stood trackside getting ready to put my helmet on and jump in the car. The formation lap had come to an end and I now sat at the start line waiting for the lights to go out. My heart was beating out my chest, my hands felt clammy in my gloves as I gripped the steering wheel.
Come on Lando, focus. You can't let Belle down.
The lights go out and I react like lighting putting my foot on the accelerator, quickly shifting up gears to pick up speed. The adrenaline is pumping through me as I focus on the task ahead, I'd not lost any positions and my pace was good. That's when the miracle of Verstappen DNF'ing that made me think I might actually win here. The race progressed and Carlos took lead, he was fast.
I thought my dreams of a podium had been destroyed when they decided to pit my team mate first but I just had to do what I could to stay ahead. When I came in to pit, my crew was that fast I didn't have chance to look to the side to see Belle. She was muse, I had to push on.
The last lap finally arrived, I was comfortably positioned in P3, come on Lando don't fuck up! I let off my grip on the steering wheel as I crossed the finish line and Will screamed down the radio we were P3.
"Yes, Wooo. Well done team. P3 how exciting" I scream down the radio. I pull in to the pit lane and stop the car under the podium at the side of Charles' car. I jump out seeing my team stood to the side, I quickly get weighed before heading over to celebrate. There was one person I couldn't wait to share this moment with. I head over to the papaya wearing group, pulling them in to hugs, shaking their hands and listening to their praise. I first see my dad, heading over and embracing him.
"Well done son, good race" my dad responds, he comes to all my races and although this isn't my first podium, I still enjoy been embraced and praised by my father.
"Thanks dad. Have you seen Belle?" I scan the crowd unable to see her.
"Look for my Max, he's got her guarded so she didn't get squished by the crowd, it's a bit crazy"
I look down the row and see my friend surrounded by media outlets, I head over to him excited to see Belle.
"Well done mate' Max pulls me in for a hug.
"Thanks man. Where's Belle?"
'She's here." Max stands to the side and I see my petite wife stood behind, in an uncrowded space.
"Lando you were amazing. Congratulations, you were so good" She screams through the noise of the crowd.
"I'm so glad you're here", I push my sweaty curls from my head before leaning in for a kiss. I can hear the clicking of cameras and the flashes of light as the media took photos but I didn't care, I'd waited for this moment since the race started.
"Lando, you need to get ready to speak to Sky" My press officer taps me on my shoulder.
"Yeah sure. I'm on my way" I kiss Belle one last time before heading off.
The interview was quick and then me, Carlos and Charles got ready to head to the podium. I stood proudly on the 3rd step looking out at the fans and the team. I scan the crowd again when my eyes meet hers. She'd moved to the front so she could see and Max stood protectively behind her. Her smile, gosh what can I say, Her smile could change the world. For the first time since I started in F1 and stood on podiums, I got a different feeling. Yes, my previous podiums I was proud but this one was different, she made it different. This feeling was amazing, I wanted a podium every race so I could look down and see that smile. This was when I knew, I had fallen deeply in love with her, that I would go to the ends of the earth to protect her and that smile, she was my forever.
