Flashback chapter

4th year

Grace was sitting under a tree next to the black lake reading her book called, Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and The wardrobe.

It was her favourite and she was at the part where Edmund snuck off to go to the white witch when she was interrupted by someone snatching the book out of her hands.

She looked up to see who took it only to be met by Regulus Black. She mentally cursed herself for paying attention to her surroundings, but in her defence when she started reading she would get so invested that she wouldn't notice if there was a fight going on right in front of her.

She noticed that Evan Rosier and Barty Crouch jr - Regulus' best friends - were there too.

Oh no. She thought.

"Give me my book back, please." She said as nicely as possible trying to avoid causing a scene. Little did she know that what would happen next would traumatise her for a while to come.

"Well would you look at that" The younger black smirked. "She said please and asked so so nicely. Shall we give it back boys?"

"Why don't we have a bit of fun first?" Barty asked. Evan remained quite the whole time just watching.

Grace looked at Evan, hurt. Evan was her best friend. They kissed just this morning at their little hideout.

Even if it turned out that they didn't have any feelings for each other they were still friends. Yet here he was: just watching as his friends picked on the girl he called his 'friend'.

The two boys threw the book to each other while Grace tried to catch the book mid air as she stood between them. To anyone who didn't know what was going on it would look like they were playing a game of 'monkey in the middle' with Grace being the monkey. But instead of a ball, she's trying to get her book.

After about throwing the book in between them for what felt like the billionth time they threw it to Evan. He caught it but remained still as the other three stared at him. Grace with hurt, and the other two with eager looks in their eyes.

However, Evan froze holding the book not knowing what to do. Since he was right beside the black lake when he dropped the book it ended up in the lake. Grace gasped. It was her favourite book, and it was first edition too.

She looked like she was about to cry at which Regulus and Barty laughed. Evan ,however, remained still frozen as he registered what he did. Grace stared at him as tears started to fall. He knew that it was her most expensive and special copy and yet he did that.

Evan knew that this would not end good. He knew that he would regret this. And this was only the starting of their 4th year. Barely a week in and he already messed up with Grace.

"Why don't we help you get your book back? What do you think Reg?" Barty asked smirking as he looked at Regulus.

"Yeah, let's do that." Regulus replied.

Before Grace could even register what was happening she was pushed into the black lake. She panicked. She forgot how to swim and immediately started thrashing around which ended really badly for her.

There was a ringing in her head. She couldn't see as her glasses were ruined because of the water. She kept blacking out before coming back over and over again. Tears were coming from her eyes which were swept away by the currents.

She didn't know what to do. She hadn't swam in so long that being in a body of water was just so unfamiliar for her now. She forhot how to swim and she couldn't get herself to focus because of the panic that she felt.

Slowly she started to feel dizzy and her vision blurred as she started to see black dots clouding her vision. At one point she thought that her head would explode.

She held her breath for as long as she could before finally inhaling right before she blacked out finally letting the water enter her lungs filling her up and choking her. And eventually she stopped breathing as her heartbeat slowly started to slow down. She couldn't feel any pain now, instead it was actually kinda peaceful.

Regulus and Barty laughed before walking off leaving a very scared and worried Evan behind. As soon as his friends were out of sight Evan took off his shoes, socks, robes and jacket before jumping in.

He swam to where Grace was right before something else in the water made a move to drag her further in. Enchanted seaweed.

He immediately held her waist and swam back up with her in his arms. He put her on the grass as she still remained unconscious. Just as he was about to get out too one of the enchanted seaweed grabbed at his leg pulling him down.

Slightly panicking he took out his wand and cast a hex at the plant finally getting it off his leg. He swam up gasping for air as he got out. Evan then looked at Gracie noticing that she was still unconscious.

"Oh shit. Shit, shit, shit." Evan said as he went forward putting both hands on her chest as he pushed as he did cpr as well. Finally after a few agonising minutes she finally opened her eyes turning to her side to spit the water out trying to get her breathing under control.

When she came back to consciousness she still couldn't see properly because her glasses were broken and soaked next to her. But she could see enough to know that Evan was looking at her fully soaked.

She started crying and when Evan went to held her she pushed him back. "Don't you ever come near me again" She mustered out her voice breaking.

"Gracie...." Evan's vision started to blur as he realised that he was about to cry. "Please, I'm sorry."

"No" She said angry now. "No"

She immediately got up staying still for a moment to stop the dizziness and after that she walked off going to the hospital wing. She felt so heavy because of her robes and were soaked making it a bit hard for her to stand up right.

Eventually she managed to get to the hospital wing after passing by about a hundred students who all stared at her whispering and pointing.
