Flashback chapter

Before Hogwarts

Grace Potter, a beautiful young child with a heart of gold. She lit up the Potters household. James Potter - her older brother - was ecstatic about having a younger sister and loved her no matter how much she often annoyed him. The young 9 year old girl was asleep in her room the night before Christmas. She was so excited that it took her hours to fall asleep.

Her parents had to practically threaten her with books and chocolate for her to sleep. She didn't want to though, claiming that if she slept, she wouldn't see the jolly man who brought presents to their house year after year. Mr and Mrs Potter didn't want to break the young girls heart by telling her that he didn't actually exist so they eased her worries and coaxed her into finally sleeping.

That very Christmas morning, the littlest Potter was the first to wake. She quietly snuck down the stairs of their big house and went to the large tree near the fire place. Silently tip toeing forward, she tried to pull one of the presents from the tree but froze when she saw the tree shake and slowly sway as if the wind was blowing rather hard today.

Yet they were indoors. Poor Gracie panicked and left the present, trying to crawl away but the tree was already falling. She screamed and layed on her back, shutting her eyes and putting her hands in front of her. She waited and waited for the tree to fall on her, to crush her. She waited for the pain but it never came.

Ever so slowly, the girl opened her eyes and was astonished to see the tree standing in its original form of glory with the lights on it glowing brighter than they had been before she reached for the present. She frowned and took deep breaths to calm her racing heart. Before she could even process what happened, footsteps came rushing down the stairs and the lights dimmed, going back to how they were before.

She was so confused and was unable to take her eyes off the tree. She knew she was a witch. She was born in a pureblood family, after all. But this... This wasn't anything like she had heard from her mother and father's stories. Or even the children's tales her parents got her from Flourish and Blotts.

Before she knew it, her parents were by her side and questioning her. Just then, she remembered that she had screamed. Grace turned to look at her parents and immediately hugged them. She didn't know what happened but it frightened her. Her older brother also joined the hug and looked at his sister worriedly.

"Are you alright, pumkin?" Her father - Fleamont Potter - asked, gently caressing her hair as he watched her with worried, brown eyes. Fleamont Potter and Euphemia Potter were an old couple. In her youth, Euphemia was told that she couldn't have children. However, through a miracle, they had James Potter. And a year later, they had Grace. No matter their old age, they raised their children with nothing but love. Loving them equally.

"I- the tree- it fell but..." Grace tried to explain but she was too in shock. Her parents and brother just held her and she explained what happened after she had finally calmed down. Her parents assured her that maybe it was just a bad dream or the magic they used on the tree was just acting up. Eventually, Grace nodded, accepting their reasoning and didn't think much of it.
