"So what makes you qualified for the position or stand out from other candidates?" The interviewer asked.
"Well, I wouldn't be able to tell you because I don't know what the other candidates have to offer. I can tell you what makes me qualified though, I'm just me. I don't feel the need to attempt to suck up so here's my resume, I'll allow that to do all the talking for me." I responded with a slight smile as I handed him my resume. In my resume, I was sure to include my many professions and hobbies. I graduated college with a BS in psychology with an associates degree in journalism. I also speak locally as a mental health activist, hoping to one day become a panelist nationally.
"Hmm...okay." He spoke while reading over my resume. "I like you and I'm sure Nile would like you too. You're hired!" He smiled.
"Forreal ? I mean thank you!" I caught myself, gotta stay professional.
"No problem. I'm Casey Lockheart by the way. I just so happen to be the COO of this company." He approached me holding his hand out for me to shake it.
"I'm so sorry Mr. Lockheart! I didn't realize!" I said, shaking his hand.
"It's cool, it's cool. You can just call me Casey by the way, we don't use last name basis around here much, it makes us seem old. Also, we're all equals here despite our respective titles." He smiled. He has a beautiful smile might I add.
"Understood. So when do I start ?" I asked.
"You'll start early Monday morning. It's a Friday afternoon and I'm sure you want to celebrate this, so go out and have some drinks or whatever you consider fun. Congratulations, see you Monday at 8AM!" He said walking towards the elevators. This building is truly one of a kind. Let me take some pictures for Lyric and Dustin and tell them the great news.
As I was walking to my car, I felt my phone vibrating signaling a phone call. I looked down to see it was our group chat named kiki & giggles.
"Hey y'all!" I said as I got into the car, sitting them down in the console.
"Hey! Congratulations sistaaaa, I knew you'd get it!" Lyric said
"That's wassup, so what are we gon do to celebrate ?" Dustin said, rubbing his hands together with mischief.
"DRINKS!" We all said in unison, causing us to laugh.
"What time are y'all trying to go ?" Lyric asked, sitting her phone up on the counter.
"Umm, let's say tonight at maybe 7 or 8? It's this poetry lounge event hosted by Reed Ali, I think we should go check it out." I suggested.
"That would be a chance to get yo' name out there as a poet too, so bet!" Dustin said in his thick New Orleans accent.
"Well alright y'all, I'm about to head up." I said as I parked my car.
"Okay, see you in a minute." Lyric said before we all hung up.
I exited my car and made my way to the elevators. As I was on the elevator I scrolled aimlessly on my Twitter. Bad idea, y'all know why. The elevator doors then opened, signaling I made it to my floor. Soon after I made it to my apartment, I opened the door and was met with the pleasant scent of hibiscus flowers.
"Honeys, I'm home!" I stated as I sat my keys down on the kitchen island.
"Nigga, we know. You just was downstairs." Dustin chuckled as he came into the living area followed by Lyrica.
"Aww nigga shut the fuck up and come hug me." I signaled for the two of them to come embrace me.
"Alright that's enough! I can't breathe." Lyrica laughed, breaking the group hug.
The three of us have been living together since me and Lyrica's junior year, which was Dustin's second year in graduate school. We've all been friends since me and Lyricas's freshman year. How I met Dustin is actually crazy, to say the least. We met on an app neither one of us had any business being on. As the conversation went on, Dustin stated that he could see us being really cool on a friendly level and that he was surprised someone like me had been on a hookup app. We've been rocking ever since then. Of course feelings got involved because I wasn't used to men being so protective and nurturing of me, but I managed to get out of that. To be quite honest Dustin was all I had, until my 'soul sistaa' Lyrica came around. How me and Lyrica met was kind of cliche. There was a college group chat and y'all know how that is. Friendships never last long within them, however our friendship lasted outside of the group chat. I felt comfortable with her almost immediately and would text her often outside of the group setting. Now here we are, standing strong as ever. These two are really all the family I have. I grew up in the foster care system, I was abandoned by my parents as a baby. The foster care system was horrible and honestly caused me to have so much trauma. I was sexually and physically abused for years, which I hate to even think about. Anyways, I'm so lucky to have these two and hopefully I have just as much impact in their lives and they have on mine...I like to believe so though.
"Aye, you good ?" Dustin said, snapping me from my thoughts.
"Yeah...yeah of course!" I put on my best smile.
"Mhm, so what's going on in that head of yours ?" Lyrica asked
"Nothin' seriously! I'm okay." I assured them although they know me way too damn good to believe me.
"So what's the plan tonight ? What poem do you plan on reading tonight ?" Dustin asked, shifting the mood in the room.
"First of all, I haven't even decided if I'll participate in the whole 'open mic night' part." I said matter of factly.
"Oh no, you will! The hell you think this is! Take advantage of this opportunity boy!" Lyric stated a little too loudly as Dustin laughed in amusement.
"Alright fine but I'm about to nap. I'll see y'all in a few hours." I said walking into my room, shortly closing the door.
Tonight should be something...
