Megan Kingsley, and her younger sister sage were raised in a picture perfect family, they got what they always wanted, overseas family vacations, designer clothes, the best of the best house in the neighbourhood, popular online, Anyone would have wanted to be them.
It was an ick for Megan every time someone expressed that. For Sage she loved it, she was basically the black sheep of the family, and did not give a hoot about it. But only the two knew what was happening behind the smiles, and family pictures, only the two heard their parents yell profanities to each other at dinner while they were forced to sit still. Only the two stayed alone for months on end to take care of themselves while their parents left for long business trips.
Megan was determined to hide this from everyone else, while on the other hand sage did not care too much to hide their collapsing family. She was just tired of pretending and tired of being held to a standard that came with her last name she just wanted to be her without no one seeing her as the Kingsley girl. Sage never understood why they bothered to stay together just to be fighting all day every day for the little time they had together in between trips. To her they were both fools to care what the society had to say. She preferred divorce over leading such a useless life without purpose.
One Sunday night, was no different. The whole house was filled with their yelling, none of them thinking about being the bigger person to calm the other down in order to solve it like grown ups.
Sage was tired of it, she could feel her ears swelling and she could take it no more. Putting a hoodie over herself she walked out of her room to her sister's, which was next door.
"Megan,"she called out poking her head in through the door. She spotted her sister at her desk, as usual. This brought a smile to her face. It was safe to say that her sister was the love of her life, she had been there when her parents weren't.
"What" She said, bluntly, turning around in her swivel chair.
"Damn girl who ate your food?" Sage joked, a giggle embracing her words, making Megan's lips lift up in a smile.
"Im just so sick of them." She complained her eyebrows scrunched up. In her eyes was pain that she didn't want to feel anymore, and neither did her sister. "Wanna go to McDonalds?" Sage asked. "My treat," she added trying to lift her sisters spirits in which she succeeded.
"Ok, ok I see you sis." Megan teased standing to put on her shoes.
They left and choose not to drive, since it wasn't that far, and they wanted to take a long walk. Both enjoyed the cold air of the night, and the slight darkness in the midst of the street lights that enveloped them was therapeutic. In silence they
walked for the first part, each was deep in their own thoughts, the only thing they could hear is bugs here and there, till sage broke the silence with her own thoughts.
"You are holding on to false hope Megan," she started. Megan's eyes were fixed on the ground Trying to blink the tears away. It was a reality that she did not want to think about nor talk about. She knew that she was delusional for this, sage had said this to her a million times, but was it wrong for her to want something good? She deserved it didn't she? "They need to break up their noise and words are constantly stuck in my head and at times I feel like it suffocating." Sage spoke her truth which she rarely did, even to her sister.
"I know," Megan whispered a lump in her throat. "But it's their life," she shrugged her shoulders as she mumbled this knowing fully well that she was going to trigger her sister with that statement.
"Their lives!" sage fumed convinced that there was something wrong with Megan.
"Listen we didn't get away from them to talk about them, this walk is about us." Megan Cleverly changed the topic as she held her younger sister's hand hoping that somehow all the anger would go away.
The two lacked a normal social circle for an 17 year old and a 15 year old. For as long as they could remember it had been the two of them. They were each other's best friend and each other's love they were homeschooled all their lives and had no contact or relationship with anyone apart from their teacher.
This was accepted by Megan, it was how it was. But sage was another kettle of fish all together. She had a curious spirit, always asking questions to her parents who had no patience to answer her. Where was their extended family? How come they didn't have any family friends? The parents said the were both only children in their families and got angry or swept the topic under the rug anytime she tried to push the topic.
In no time they got to McDonald's and each ordered a Mc flurry. It was ecstasy in a drink and they did not bother not to be a little dramatic over the drink.
"Mhhh," Megan hummed after her first sip while all sage could do was close her eyes and dramatically moan as she savoured the taste. They started their walk back to the house all happy and playful
"You are not even listening to what I'm saying!" Sage complained after noticing that her sister was on her phone and wasn't responding to her.
"I am," she laughed out her eyes still glued on her phone. Sage snatched it from her hands, only to see her on some guy's Instagram page and had liked all the photos.
"Do you like him? Eww," sage teased shoving the phone back
"What do you mean eww he looks good." Megan defended her longtime crush
"Yeah he also looks like a whore." Sage bluntly said
"You don't even know him ,"
"You don't even know him," she echoed her sister's words genuinely worried about her.
Megan was about to reply to her when a fire fighting truck passed them followed by a police car. They both stood still till the sirens receded
"Our neighbourhood has never had a fire incident in like forever," Sage stated as a matter-of-factly then proceeded to take a loud last sip from her drink making her sister chuckle
"Yes, I know my heart goes out to them." Megan said
Sage kissed her teeth. "Girl is that all you have to say anytime anything happens? Typical black bitch."
" My heart does go out to them what do you want me to say?" Her defensiveness was funny to her sister who laughed out loud.
They approached their house and to see smoke and flames coming out of it and law enforcement and firefighters outside was something neither of them saw this happening even in their most feral dreams.
