But I was wrong, no one was dying, other than the spider that just got stepped on multiple times. What a way to start the year. I always hated the first day, not just because of the big, long, repetative speech Dumbledore always gave, or the everlasting Sorting Ceremony. No, I hated the first day because we had to sit with our Houses, but all my friends were in different Houses, and my sister too. Well... half-sister.
I rested my chin in my hand, picking at my food, looking at my friends at their House tables. I was seated between Dean Thomas and Alicia Spinnet at the Gryffindor table. Dean was in my year, fifth, while Alicia was here for her final year, lucky ass bitch. I never talked to her much, but I heard about her accomplishments with her Quidditch. Dean, on the other hand, was sort of stupid, but his heart was kind, but his friend group was one I didn't want to be in.
My friend group was all over the place and it was weird, but good weird. Zara and I were the closest, she had two brothers, Blaise and Mason Zabini and god, did they look alike. Then there were Lorenzo and Theodore, little shits. They annoy the crap out of everyone whenever they're in the room, but thankfully they can be serious when they want to be. Then there is Mattheo Riddle. Who let him in our group? I rolled my eyes to myself as I thought about him. Unlike Enzo and Theo, his whole entire presence was just utterly annoying. And then there's Pandora, she's the sweetest, and my big sister. My brain still couldn't comprehend how shitty her father is, how did such a wonderful lady come from that piece of shit.
Pandora and I have the same mother, but she was always drowning in a river of alcohol, so there wasn't much left. Mother was the reason why Pandora never drank, and why she's so responsible. I was scared I was going to turn into a version of my mother. Pandora and I lived with my dad and our mother, but her father wanted to see her sometimes every summer.
"Hey," someone said, nudging me with their arm, "done sulking?" I looked up to see Zara. My literal saviour. "Wanna get out of here? We're going to have more food in the common room anyways."
"Don't have to ask me twice," I laughed, stumbling out of my seat. Since most of our friend group were Slytherin, it was easier to sneak a few people in their common room then smuggle in a bunch of rowdy boys in our common rooms. Slytherins never cared that we joined, but Gryffindors and Ravenclaws were vicious. We walked to the crowded table, finding our friends, huddled together, glaring at anyone who was in arms reach of them. Zara smacked her two brothers in the back of their head.
"You ready guys?" She asked after earning a smack of the arm back. They shot up out of their seat, everyone was bored to shit. We all left, and the professors didn't even care, if they did, they knew they couldn't do anything, we were stubborn as hell.
"Look at you," Enzo exclaimed while we walked through the corridors. "Snow had a growth spurt," he laughed, messing up my once perfect hair.
"Don't be ridiculous," Riddle commented, walking beside Enzo, hands in his pockets. "Snow doesn't grow. It's physically impossible for her." I rolled my eyes and flipped him off. When we entered the Slytherin common room, it was deserted, the fire wasn't even on since no one had been here since the end of last year.
"It seems as though the professors care less and less," Blaise said annoyed. Dust was even forming.
"Well," Zara said, clapping her hands, "this is great. Enzo, turn on the fire, Blaise and Mason, move the furniture, Theo and Riddle go dust." I stifled a laugh as everyone glared at Zara, other than Enzo, he had the easiest job.
"What about you?" Mason pointed out.
"Me and E are going to raid the kitchen. Later losers." Zara looped her arm through mine and we marched out the door and down the corridor again. "Okay, so, now that those idiots are out of the way and being slightly less useless," she started. She then jumped into my arms, screaming. Another spider? "I haven't seen you all summer. I need updates, please." I laughed and hugged her back.
"Well, for starters, me and my dad were tired of being cut away from civilization so we moved. We're now in an actual house more in the city."
"What about your mom?"
"She lives with us too, but she never comes out of her room. Unless she's going for a late night drive. I'm tired of trying to take care of her though, she refuses any help." I looked at Z's face, I understood the expression, but pity was the last thing I wanted. "Besides that, I was finally able to make friends." She gasped dramatically.
"Are you saying we're not good enough?" Her hand was over her heart as if I stabbed her. I shoved her, laughing.
"Trust me, you guys are better than muggles. But now I finally I had someone to talk to other than my dad and sister."
"This is why you talk to me," Zara beamed.
"Mhmm, no I'm good," I laughed, "anyways, I met these two at night, 'cause I couldn't sleep, they are very... carefree, but at least they don't ask questions." We entered the kitchen and I kept ranting as we rummaged through the cupboards. "The girl, Belle, is very smart, and looks like the princess, she told me that's why her mother named her that. And that her mom's favourite muggle princess was someone named Belle. The guy, Van, is more like Theo or someone." I shuddered as I thought about how alike they were. "Anyways, at least his handsome," I looked around while we walked back, making sure no one was around, "in the last week of summer break, Belle was on vacation, leaving me and Van, things kind of got awkward." I know me and Van agreed not to tell anyone but Z was my best friend and I told her everything.
"Did he hurt you?" Zara's eyes turned dark and her smile fell, transforming into a scowl.
"No, far from." I felt my cheeks heat up and turn red while my lips tightened into a smile. "We didn't know what to do, not without Belle around. We passed the time very... passionately. I swear, my lips still hurt from kissing that bastard."
"Boo, you only kissed?" My mouth hung agape as I smacked her. That was one thing however that I was too embarrassed about, so I lied.
"Unlike my dear mother, I don't sleep around." We giggled while we ranted about the rest of summer until we got back to the common room. Theo and Riddle were still dusting while Enzo, Mason, and Blaise were all sprawled out on the couches. I was honestly surprised they didn't just use magic.
"Finally," Mason jumped up from his seat once he saw us and the food, "I'm starving. Moving the couches takes a lot of work."
"Shut up!" Theo yelled from the corner. "Why are we dusting anyways? We're not maids."
"You didn't have to," Zara smirked, "I just told you. Does this mean you guys actually listen to me?" Both Theo and Riddle dropped the dusters and glared at my best friend who was shining with pride. We all found our seats and gobbled up the food, telling everybody our summer events.
"Surprised you didn't melt, Snow," Riddle smirked, earning a glare from me.
"Ha ha, haven't heard that one before. It's totally not like you say that to me every year."
"You love me."
"I really don't."
