On that fateful Halloween night, Lily and James survived while Voldemort apparently 'marked' Harry Potter as his equal.

Hogwarts, as they said, never truly slept.
Aria's wand was tucked tightly in her hand as her footsteps fell soundlessly against the worn stone of the castle floor.
Pansy was just ahead, hair tied back, lips pursed with Blaise falling into steps behind her.
"You know," Blaise whispered dryly, sidling up beside Aria as they crept toward the courtyard, "I take back my confidence about the whole following 'Harry Potter in the middle of the night' ordeal."
Pansy glanced over her shoulder, eyes glittering. "You were pretty excited at the prospect, if I recall."
"I was hoping for scandalous, not expellable," Blaise retorted.
"Same thing," Draco muttered darkly from behind the trio. "With Potter, it always ends in disaster."
"Shut it," Aria hissed. "He's moving."
Through the courtyard arch, they spotted a shimmer in the air—Harry threw what seemed like an invisibility cloak over himself.
He was trailing Hagrid, who in turn walked alongside the beaubatonx giant woman. No—giantess. Easily ten feet tall, wide-shouldered and dressed in shaggy furs.
"Can we not," Draco groaned, rubbing his temples. "We're already following Potter into the Forbidden Forest at night. It'd be nice to get through it without discussing that oaf's potential shags."
"I didn't say they shagged," Pansy said airily, "but now that you brought it up..."
"Oh for fuck's sake," Draco hissed.
Aria muffled a snort, then frowned and looked over her shoulder. "Wait—where's Theo? Wasn't he supposed to come with you?"
Draco glanced behind them. "He was."
"Well he's not here," she muttered, scanning the shadows.
"Maybe he bailed," Pansy offered. "Wouldn't blame him. Bit creepy out here."
"We're talking about the same Theo right? The one who's anywhere but his common room after curfew."
"And look who's talking."
Aria turned so fast she nearly tripped over a root.
Pansy actually shrieked.
Theo stood there like he hadn't just scared the shit out of half the group.
"Relax," he said. "It's just me."
"Don't ever do that again." Blaise exhaled, still clutching the front of his robes.
