Peter followed closely behind Aria as she led him to what they called the Slytherin common room.

There was a lot to take in— floating candles, talking paintings, staircases with minds of their own, Peter had been trying hard to act like he wasn't impressed but his micro reactions ended up giving him away.

The light filtering through the windows was murky and green, as though they stood beneath a lake . Strange aquatic silhouettes slid past every so often, throwing rippling reflections across the stone floor.

"Okay," Peter muttered under his breath, taking in every detail "Ned would have a heart attack."

Some students glanced up at them with vague curiosity before going back to their hushed conversations.

The duo ascended a narrow spiral staircase until they stopped at a tall, polished wooden door. Aria glanced over her shoulder at Peter.

"Listen, Peter, my friends can be a bit..." her face scrunched up as she tried to think of an adjective. "..."

Peter nodded for her to continue.

Aria exhaled harshly. "They're not the sweetest bunch but they're good deep down, okay? So don't take anything they say to heart."

"I survived Sam Wilson and Bucky Barnes, combined, I don't think your friends could be worse than that." Peter joked, his heartbeat speeding up a bit despite his words.

Aria chuckled before pushing the door open.

The moment they stepped in, the room seemed to pause.

A blond boy lying on his back on one of the beds propped himself up on his elbows. "Uh, who the hell is this?"

Aria didn't hesitate. "Guys, this is Peter. He's gonna be staying here for a bit."

A beat of silence.

"Maybe an explanation?" Blaise suggested with an impressive blend of incredulousness and sarcasm, glancing between the two.

Theo sat at the far end of the room, lounging against the headboard of his bed, one knee pulled up. He didn't say anything. But Aria could feel the heat of his stare on the side of her face.

Peter stepped forward as he scanned the room, seemingly unbothered by the tension. If he was nervous, he hid it well. "I'm Aria's friend."

The words tasted bad on his tongue. Maybe if he hadn't taken Liz to prom, he would've introduced himself as something else.

Aria took a breath and quickly ran through the story — how Peter had come from New York with her family, how her dad and the Avengers had sent him, how he was to be here temporarily during the Triwizard Tournament. The boys weren't exactly warm, but they were listening. Even some girl named Pansy wandered in during the explanation, standing by the door, arms crossed.
