Before she was Hamato Atsuko, wife of the Hamato Yuuta and mother of Hamato Yoshi...she used to go by an name of Mori Atsuko and she used to be known as the daughter of Mori Toshiro...who was one of the greatest ninjustsu masters...in the Foot Clan. 

Yes, that's right, Atsuko used to be in the Foot Clan but she and her father were different from the rest. Though it was known as a weakness, he taught Atsuko of mercy and compassion, but he warned her to never show it to others unless they earn your trust. 

Atsuko trusted Toshiro with her life, since the day he got her out of the streets. Though he was not her biological daughter, that mattered not because he was the only father she has ever known and to him, she was his daughter. 

Though neither he nor Atsuko had an easy life in the Foot, they were happy because they had each other and they one day dreamed to overthrow Oroku Maji, and bring back honor to a clan that was destroyed centuries ago but things changed when Atsuko fell in love with a certain witch who would destroy everything she held dear...

Won't go into detail but let us just say that, Toshiro died trying to protect her and Atsuko was taken prisoner by the Oroku family. They wanted her to marry Oroku Maji's youngest son, Nagi but she refused each time, for she did not love him and never will after what he had taken from her. 

She thought that eventually, she would die alongside her father but Hamato Yuuta, saved her from that fate. Even though they were enemies, Yuuta saved her and, he as well as his mother gave her a home in the Hamato Clan, against Master Sho's wishes. 

However...though grateful, Atsuko was distrusting and often lashing out. She returned being that scared, out of control orphaned girl on the streets but the Hamato family was not willing to give up on her so easily. Hamato Yumi, who was Yuuta's mother, somehow got through to her and trained her to be a fearless, strong kunoichi that would one day kill...Oroku Maji. 

After Oroku Maji's death, she and Yuuta slowly fell in love with each other and shortly got married. Everyone was happy for them, all except Yuuta's father, Sho who only saw Atsuko for who she used to be and not for who she is now. Yuuta did not let his father get in his way though and married Atsuko anyway, and that was probably the first time he ever disobeyed his father. 

A couple years later...they decide to have children of their own but...Atsuko could never seem to make it full term. It broke her heart each time, whenever she lost a child but after a few good years of trying, finally, finally, they had their son who Atsuko named Yoshi. Though she and Yuuta wanted more children, they decided that it was just too painful to try again and that Yoshi would be their only. Atsuko had the child she wanted and Yuuta had his heir, so there was really no need for another but...
