Back in San Francisco, Wendy was at home just finishing up preparing a meal for herself. She placed her food at the table and quietly sat down to herself. Tears fell down from her face slightly. She had read Caitlin's note and felt bad that they couldn't even say goodbye to each other. She also wondered how she was out for so long as she hadn't heard anything from her daughter or from any of the tutors she was currently working with.
Just as it seemed like all hope was lost, a bright light had shone from through the window. She looked outside and saw a giant portal out in the yard. She freaked out for a moment as she had no idea what was happening. She walked over to the door slowly and opened it slightly.
Out of the portal came out both Caitlin and her dad in the wheelchair.
The young woman had let out a loud gasp.
"I can't believe it...after all these years...y-you're alive!"
Victor smiled back at his wife, realizing how long it has been since he last saw her.
"Well, I barely made it back alive but...I'm home now honey."
Wendy then rushed over to hug them both, her eyes completely filled with tears.
"I thought I would never see you again. And I was worried about you, Caitlin. I saw your note and hadn't realized you had gone off on your own without saying goodbye to me. Please don't do it again. You had me completely worried."
"I know mom, I'm sorry. I was too scared to tell you the truth but I had gone off on my own to find father again. It was an incredibly long journey and we both went through a lot but in the end, it was all worth it."
Wendy hugged them one last time before she offered them to come inside. She whipped up a few quick meals for them to eat and they all enjoyed themselves as they continued to bond at the dinner table.
After eating, Wendy tried her best to gather some supplies that would mend Victor's wounds easily. Whilst in the living room, both Victor and Caitlin shared a small conversation.
"I'm sure you must be excited going back to school again after this long adventure. You can tell all your friends about all the cool stuff you got to experience," Victor said to her.
Caitlin looked down a little. That would be true if she was actually going to public school instead of taking her studies at home. She then informed her dad that about her situation and that she was doing all her studies at home with her mom.
"Wait, so you mean all this time, your mother hasn't even let you attend any public institution?"
Caitlin replied back,
"Yeah, I know mom does it to protect me but I think she's been doing a great job with teaching me and she even gets help from other professional tutors around here as well."
Wendy had overheard their conversation. She knew now would be the right time to give her the news that she had been planning to tell her.
After speaking with her dad, Caitlin had now gone up back in her room. It had been so long that she had seen it that the first thing she did was lay on her bed for a little. She glanced over her whole room for a moment as she did as she had really missed it.
She then walked over to her window and looked out at the open sky. It was at this time of evening where she loved looking out to see the different shades of color in the sky and all the stars that would soon appear. She also loved the mild cool breeze that would blow into her room.
Her mom then opened the door slightly and saw her daughter looking out at the sky once again. She walked closer to her and then cleared her throat, to which this catches Caitlin's attention.
"I'm not interrupting am I?" her mom asks.
"Oh no, it's fine. Well you know me, just observing the night sky like I usually do."
She turns around to look out at the window once again and then turns back to her mom.
"I really had one of the best experiences of my life mom. I made new friends over on that planet and we all had to try and defeat an evil dictator and his entire army of half-human, half-robot minions. Turns out dad had been captured by them all along. But in the end, I'm glad he made it back ok in one piece."
Wendy had a face of pure shock and astonishment at the same time, just hearing about her story. But she was also quite happy to see her daughter grow more confident in herself and in her own passions. She then felt it was time to tell her the big news that she had in store for her.
"Well I have some good news for you sweetie. As a reward for bringing your father and yourself back home, I have decided that you are now free to pursue your own college degree at the Public State University. Now you don't have to worry about me stressing to find suitable lectures for you to study."
Her face then immediately lit upon hearing this news.
"Oh my gosh! Do you really mean that?"
Wendy nodded her head.
"Yes, most definitely! Only a young girl like you deserves to study at a prestigious institution after helping an entire race of beings save their own planet."
Caitlin then immediately sprung with joy and hugged her mom tight.
"Thank you so much, mom. I will try my best to work hard and continue to make you proud."
Between the next few days before she would start classes, she made sure to get all her things in order and that she had enough supplies needed to take along with her for the University. She even got some fresh new clothes that she would wear to go out with.
As excited as she was about all of this, she was also nervous on how she would fit into this new environment. She then remembered how well she made friends with Sonic and all the rest of them back on their planet, so maybe she thought she would be lucky with this new place too.
The big day had now arrived where she would be attending this new institution. The feeling of excitement and anxiousness had taken over her whole self. She saw large crowds of students. As she walked along the halls, the best thing she could do is just give a smile and wave back. The student with the locker next door, named Jamie, was also studying the same major as her. The two of them got along well and became lab partners for their Chemistry class. The professors she interacted with were all very nice as well. Overall, it had been a great start to this new lifestyle of hers.
Meanwhile, back at home, as Victor recovered majorly from his injuries, he attempted to fix up the portal machine to make it even more advanced. This time he would be more cautious in not making the same reckless mistakes as last time and he ensured that Caitlin would soon be able to see her friends from the distant planet very soon again.
