Shawn P.O.V.

My Mate
5:14 pm. I have friends that live above the bar, take them to my cabin and keep them safe there NOW, I'll explain later

I re-read my mate's text as I stand outside of his bar. I know Angel went to see his father but I wonder what happened for him to send me such a vague text. Regardless, I rushed over here from his house to find his friends.

"Well it's not like I was doing anything," I say dryly.

Except waiting for my mate to return.

I race up the steep stairs behind the bar and knock on the door at the top. It's an old rusted green door with an equally rusted door knob attached to it.

No sound follows for a long minute but then the door cracks open and half a face stares back at me. I attempt to smile down at the person.

"Uh. Hello, my name is —"

Before I can finish my sentence the door slams in my face and the sound of locks fill the air.

"Shawn,"

I look around like I just found out I was being pranked. "What the?" Hushed voices can be heard from the other side of the door but I can't make out what they're saying.

I knock on the door again. "Hey! Angel told me to come here and to take you to his cabin,"

I stand here and wait for a response that most likely won't come. "Well then," I jiggle the door handle gently as I look around for a spare key.

I check on the top of the porch light. Nothing.
Under the black mat. Nothing.
Across the door frame. Nothing!

I send a text to Angel asking if there's a key anywhere.

A little impatient, I knock on the door again. "Hey. I don't know why but Angel told me to come to get you and take you to his cabin. The least you can do is open the door and talk to me," I say before jiggling the door handle again to at least scare them into opening it.

"H-hey stop that," A small voice shouts from at the bottom of the stairs,

I swivel my head in his direction. He cowers back but still has his head held high. "And who are you?"

He bites his lips as if willing himself not to answer. He's holding a bag of food that I can smell from all the way up here. My guess is that he lives here with the boy and whoever is on the other side of this door.

I think Abby said there were four of them. And one of them is pregnant.

I soften my tone and hold my hands up in a surrender stance. "Look. I know how this may look. But I was sent here by Angel. He said to come here and take his friends that live above the bar to his cabin,"

"I don't believe you,"

"I'm not lyin',"

"Oh ok then. I grab my stuff and follow you to middle of nowhere," I notice that the way he speaks is in broken English. Like it's not his first language.

"I never said to the middle of nowhere," I say as I start to descend the steps. The boy jumps and skitters back before I can take my third step.

"Don't move!"

Suddenly, the door behind me flies open and I turn to see a lanky girl run out. All in one movement, she runs to me and round kicks me so hard, I begin to tumble down the steep stairs.

My body folds in on itself multiple times on my descent. At the bottom, I hit my head on the graveled asphalt which does nothing but give me a headache.
