Cas didn't look too intense. Despite this though, there was something hidden in the creases around her eyes that said "you're in for a hell of a ride." Unable to hold her gaze for long, you turned your attention to Jenner. He looked just as pale as before, empty pack of cigarettes in hand. You wanted to ask him if everything was okay, but you already knew the answer. He raised his metallic hand and beckoned you over.
This was weird. Jenner and Cas hardly ever made deliberate conversation with you in public. Hell, they didn't even talk that much with each other in public! Almost every conversation you had ever had with them was behind a closed door. You knew what they wanted to tell you was serious, but serious enough to break this unspoken rule? You gave Luz, Amity, and the twins an apologetic frown.
"Sorry guys, I gotta go." You tapped the tip of your good ear and turned to Luz. She just stared at you for a moment before her eyes snapped to realization. She scooched out of the booth and stood next to the table as you exited. You couldn't help but notice her eyes shifting between Jenner and Cas.
"I know you," She began unexpectedly. "You're (y/n)'s brother."
How'd she know that? It took you a moment to remember that she'd picked out his photo in your treasure trove back home. Jenner scoffed and rolled his eyes. "Don't remind me."
Your gut instinct was to flip him off, but the urge to do so became muted when you noticed Luz's eyes fall upon Cas.
Oh shit.
Why "oh shit?" Well, it simply just felt appropriate. You noticed Luz's shoulders stiffen as she locked eyes with the woman.
"Do you know me?" Cas asked the girl, quirking a brow. Luz blinked, eyes still wide, and shook her head. Cas nodded. "Lovely." She put a hand on your shoulder.
"Let's go."
You could still feel your friends' eyes on your back as you walked towards the kitchen. The feeling only stopped once you were thoroughly past the door, and even then, the ghost of it still lingered over your shoulder. By the time the three of you made it to the back of the building, the shadows of the town and trees had stretched even further, grayish-purple sky allowing for bushes and branches to become banshees and beasts.
Cas stared out into the breaking night for a moment before walking forward. She snapped around on her heel and stared at the wall behind you. In the blink of an eye, she was dashing forward. Propelling up the wall, she grasped onto a nearby fire escape ladder. The thing came creaking down and stopped with a metallic clang. Cas pulled herself up and onto the platform and continued her way up. She didn't look down to make sure you two were following. She didn't need to.
Jenner was up next, skipping off the wall to get a higher hold on the ladder before climbing up. He too began to climb the stairs, though paused to look at you. He radiated an emotion that was cringingly familiar. It was the same feeling he emitted when he confronted you about Blondie. Instead of feeling ashamed though, you were confused. What on earth was he upset about? Before he turned away, you caught a glimpse of another emotion. One you weren't used to seeing in Jenner. His eyes went from glaring at you with knowledge you didn't know to wide with furrowed brows and narrow pupils, a deep breath separating the two states of being. Standing on the ashes of his cigarettes, it finally clicked.
He was scared.
Not scared of you, though
Scared for you.
