The Things You Do For A Friend

The two of you were still just standing there like nothing had happened. Your spirit threatened to fall apart at a stale breeze and by the looks of it, so did Blondie's. As his words echoed around your skull, you looked back on every time you'd ever been around him.

That first night in the alley, he'd never casted a single spell by hand. At St. Tribrachius he only fought with his staff and hands. He'd never spun his own spell circle. Then there was later in the tower. He had to light those candles with his staff. The previous night? He never even tried to cheat his flower crown with a quick spell! And finally there was today's meeting at Moonbucks. Not once did he ever cast a single spell while interrogating you, while reaching for his coffee, while doing anything! How the fuck hadn't you noticed this sooner?!

You internally kicked yourself, feeling so stupid for not picking up on this. As you were doing that, you saw Blondie jolt in your hazy vision.

"TREE!" You heard him cry. If you weren't befuddled before, you sure were now.

"Tree?" You turned around. "OH SHIT! TREE!"
The two of you lept behind the boulder, and just in the nick of time. An uprooted pine went sailing past where you had just stood! Both of you were laying in the snow, pressed against each other, absolutely shocked. You turned to each other at the same time.

"You don't think you could have brought that up sooner?" You crooned at him. He raised his shoulders. "I shouted 'tree' as soon as I saw it!"
"Not the tree, you cotton-headed ninny-muggins! Your magic! You don't have magic?!" You hopped up and hoisted yourself onto the rock. You stared over the top and watched as the slitherbeast stamped its feet.

"No!" His words came out sounding like more of a question. "I wasn't born with one of those magic bile sac thingies- You know what I mean, you mutton-breaded... Okay,I honestly have no idea what you said, but whatever it was, I'M NOT IT!"

"And you're only bringing this up now?"
"What did you want me to do? March up to a known criminal and tell them I'm powerless right off the bat??"
"SHH!"
"Don't shush me!"
"SHHH!!!"
"SHHH!!!"

Your shushing match was cut short by the ear-piercing hissing of the slitherbeast. It was rushing towards you! The two of you pressed yourselves closer to the boulder and clasped your hands over your ears. At first, you had your eyes strained shut, but you forced them open when you remembered just who was in danger. Your heart dropped into your stomach at the sight of it stampeding along. In one of its hands, you could make out three familiar figures.

Eda.

Ed.

Em.

That means Amity and Luz are by themselves! They're probably terrified! The twins were probably terrified too. Hell, YOU were terrified! Eda was-

...

Actually, Eda was probably fine, BUT EVERYONE ELSE IN THIS SITUATION WAS FREAKING THE FUCK OUT!!!

You watched the creature disappear around the bend. You wanted to chase after them, but you didn't. You wanted to run over to Luz and Amity and help them, but you didn't. You couldn't. You couldn't move. Everything felt like it was a million miles away. Your ears were stuffed with invisible cotton. Your eyes glazed blanky ahead. Your hands fell to your sides, numb. The faint rumble of your shattered breathing swelled your chest as time melted into oblivion. Your throat was dry and your heart was racing. The steam of your overworked brain clouded the windows to your mind and swallowed each and every thought in its path, leaving them unfinished.
