Tell me your secrets and ask me your questions
Oh, let's go back to the start
Running in circles, coming up tails
Heads on a science apart
Nobody said it was easy
It's such a shame for us to part
Nobody said it was easy
No one ever said it would be this hard
Oh, take me back to the start
Coldplay ~ The Scientist
"...and so in the middle of the jungle, surrounded by towering trees and piercing silence," Shane whispers, trying to maintain a serious tone. "We stumbled upon an ancient temple."
"Wait, how can silence be piercing?" Jane interrupts, bored.
Shane sends a glare her way before he continues, "Inside the temple, we discovered a room filled with eerie symbols. The walls seemed to whisper ancient secrets..."
Jane interrupts again, a mischievous grin spreading across her face. "Oh, did they whisper the secret recipe for the perfect pizza? Because I could really go for some right now!"
Shane ignores her.
"But just as we were about to uncover the temple's deepest secrets," Shane goes on, "a haunting whisper echoed through the chamber."
Jane, unable to contain herself, blurts out, "Was it a ghost with a lisp? Like, 'Boo! I'm here to give you the heebie-jeebies!'"
"Would you shut up?" Shane gets to his feet and places his hands on his hips.
I hear an exasperated sigh to my right and see Zach hang his head in defeat. After the power outage, we had all gathered in the family room with some board games. Scott had fallen asleep after our second round at Cluedo and when Zach had put him to bed, Shane got the brilliant idea of sharing scary stories.
"Both of you, shut up," Zach stands up. "I wish the power could come back so you both could get the fuck out of here."
"Ouchie." Shane pouts and sits back down, his eyes connecting with mine. "Should we play truth or dare?"
"What are we? Ten?" Jane snorts.
"You got a better idea?" Shane asks.
I watch the two start to bicker again and I feel a headache coming on. I look around and notice that Zach hasn't come back yet. I leave the room and walk upstairs to see Zach on the main balcony which overlooks the back garden.
I open the double doors and join him.
"Hey," I bump my shoulder to his, "you okay?"
He looks down at me, his eyes soft and says, "yeah, you?"
"Am I a bad friend to say I want them to go home?" I ask, biting back a smile when Zach laughs.
"Nah," he shakes his head, "I wanted them gone yesterday."
I chuckle and move to stare at the dark garden. The storm has calmed but it's still raining. I lean over the railing to see if the other houses have electricity and sigh when I see nothing but darkness.
"Wanna play a game?" I look up at Zach and he smiles, nodding. "Truth or dare?"
He laughs, "Truth."
I hum as I think what to ask him.
"Have you ever...stolen something?" I ask.
Again, he laughs and scratches his chin, thinking.
"I've never stolen something from a shop, but, I stole dad's car once.""
I laugh, "What happened then?"
"I was grounded for the whole summer," he shakes his head, chuckling. "Okay, your turn, truth or dare?"
"Truth," I smile at him.
"Do you like Pete?" he asks, shocking me a little bit.
I look him in the eye, "No."
He stares at me for a moment and his eyes darken before he says, "Dare."
I stare at him as my breaths quicken. He turns his body towards mine, and he's closer than before. My eyes move over his hair, eyes, nose and then lips before connecting with his eyes again.
"Dare," he repeats, his voice huskier before.
"Kiss me," I say.
