Staring at the bottom of your glass

Hoping one day you'll make a dream last

But dreams come slow and they go so fast

You see her when you close your eyes

Maybe one day you'll understand why

But you only need the light when it's burning low

Only miss the sun when it starts to snow

Only know you love her when you let her go

Only know you've been high when you're feeling low

Only hate the road when you're missing home

Only know you love her when you let her go

Passenger ~ Let Her Go

I keep my eyes on Kaylee and Scott as they run around the yard, playing catch

I keep my eyes on Kaylee and Scott as they run around the yard, playing catch. Scott is in a Spiderman suit, without the mask, and every time he runs towards Kaylee, he raises his small hand to shoot out pretend-web.

I chuckle when he does it again and Kaylee pretends to get caught in it and falls.

"Hello...?" I hear from the phone pressed against my ear, "You still there, bud?"

"Yeah, sorry, dad," I say. "So, this weekend?"

"Of course, are you planning on driving up there on Friday or Saturday?" Dad asks.

I had the weekend planned and Kaylee and I were going to drive to my dad's Aspen house to spend some alone time. Scott was gonna sleep over at my parents' house while we were away.

"Friday, I think," I reply. "That way we'll have the whole weekend to unwind."

"Sounds like a plan," Dad says, his voice warm. "Scott's looking forward to spending time with us. He mentioned something about making a giant fort in the living room, his own Avenger tower."

I chuckle. "Of course he did."

After a few more minutes of chatting, I hang up and turn to see Kaylee, who's been listening in.

"Everything set?" she asks, raising an eyebrow.

"Yep. We're good to go. My dad's excited to have Scott over, and it sounds like Scott's got some grand fort plans."

Kaylee smiles, her eyes sparkling with excitement. "This is going to be great. A whole weekend just for us."

Ever since our kiss on the balcony a week ago, we've transitioned into a comfortable relationship as girlfriend and boyfriend. When we had announced this to our families, they hadn't been too surprised. Both sets of parents seemed to have seen it coming before we did, and their support made everything feel even more right.

But the one who had been most happy, maybe even happier than us, was Shane.

"So, you two finally got it together, huh?" Shane had said with a broad grin when we broke the news. "Took you long enough!"

The car rolls to a stop in front of the house and I shut off the engine. I look over at Kaylee who fell asleep an hour ago. I get out of the car, and jog over to the passenger side. I open the door, release the seatbelt around Kaylee and pull her close to me before lifting her up in my arms.

She stirs slightly, nuzzling her head against my shoulder but doesn't wake up. The porch light casts a warm glow over us as I carry her up the steps to the front door. Balancing her weight, I manage to unlock the door and push it open with my foot.

Inside, the house is quiet and dark. I navigate through the familiar layout, careful not to bump into any furniture. I gently lay Kaylee down on the couch, brushing a strand of hair from her face. She looks so peaceful, so small. I take a moment to watch her, feeling a wave of protectiveness and love wash over me.

Slowly, her eyes open and her face softens when her eyes meet mine. With ease, she sits up, wraps her arms around my neck and connect her lips to mine.

And my heart skips a motherfucking beat.

When we finally break apart, we're both breathing a little heavier. She looks at me with a mix of affection and something deeper, something that makes my pulse race.

"Hey," she whispers, a smile playing on her lips.

"Hey yourself," I reply, my voice just as soft.

"Sorry I fell asleep," she says.

I shake my head, smiling. "Don't worry about it."

"Wanna give me a tour of the house?" Kaylee asks just as the doorbell rings, "Are we expecting someone?"

"No," I tell her, with a shrug.

I glance at the clock, wondering who could be visiting at this hour. With a sense of curiosity and confusion, I guide Kaylee to the door. As I open it, and see who it is, rage boils within me.

"Amelia," Kaylee says beside me, her tone shocked. I feel her hand start to slip from my hold when Amelia's eyes shift to our hands, but instead of letting go, I hold on to her tighter.
